Tolstoy’s Themes

Tolstoy built the Circle of Reading by theme. Each day has one, which he named, and its opening thought states it.

If you sometimes feel that, for all your desire to conquer passion, passion is overpowering you, do not think that you cannot conquer passion. This proves only that this time you could not do it. A driver does not throw down the reins for failing to stop the horses at once, but keeps on pulling — and the horses stop. So it is with you: if once you failed to restrain yourself, go on struggling, and it is surely you who will win, and not the passions.

The true meaning of Christianity can now be seen by all, and its influence is already stronger than the deception that hides it.

A woman does not differ from a man in her fundamental calling in life. That calling is the service of God. The difference is only in the object of the service. Although a woman’s calling in life is the same as a man’s, to serve God, and is fulfilled by the same means — love — for most women the object of this service is more definite than for a man. That object is the rearing and upbringing, in love, of ever new workers for the work of God.

Neither the descriptions nor the sight of the horrors of war keeps people from taking part in war. One of the reasons for this is that all who contemplate the horrors of war arrive, in spite of themselves, at an unexpressed, vague consideration: that if so terrible a thing exists and is permitted, then there probably also exist causes of this terrible thing that are hidden from them. This consideration leads people who are often not wicked to defend war, seeking out its beneficial sides, as they seek out the beneficence of the forces of nature, and forgetting that they themselves make it.

The calling of woman and of man is one and the same: the service of God. But the ways in which each sex serves are different and precisely defined. And so each sex must serve God in its own way, the way defined for it. The chief, the exclusive work of woman — given to her alone, and necessary for the life and the perfecting of humanity — is the bearing and early upbringing of children. And so all a woman’s strength and attention must be directed to this work and to what touches on it. A woman can do everything a man does, but a man cannot do what a woman does (childbearing and early upbringing). And so a woman must put all her strength into doing well the work (of childbearing and early upbringing) that she alone can do.

One person shouts “Fire!” in a building full of people — and the crowd stampedes, and dozens, hundreds of people are killed.

Such is the evident harm done by a word. But this harm is no less great when we do not see the people who have suffered from our word.

For the truth to be heard, it must be spoken with kindness. However clever and true a thing said in anger may be, it is not conveyed to another. And so know that if what you say to people is not taken in by them, it is one of two things: either what you consider the truth is not the truth, or you convey it without kindness, or both together.

Most often people do not agree with the truth because they feel offended by the form in which the truth is offered to them.

Why do people so love to judge one another? Because all who judge another think that they would not have done what they judge their neighbor for. This is also why people love to hear their neighbors judged.

  • March 1818 марта

Condemning another is always mistaken, because no one can ever know what has gone on and is going on in that other’s soul.

  • April 2727 апреля

Unkind feelings call forth the judging of people, but very often judging people calls forth in us unkind feelings toward them, all the more unkind the more we judge them.

  • June 1414 июня

How little effort is needed not to condemn our neighbor, and how much easier life becomes for those who do not condemn others. Yet how few people make this effort.

  • July 3030 июля

Only those who know all their own weaknesses can be just to the weaknesses of their neighbor.

  • September 2727 сентября

Condemning our neighbor is an amusement that people who do not understand all the harm of this amusement find it hard to refrain from. But for those who understand all the harm of condemnation, it is a sin not to abstain from it merely for the sake of amusement.

  • October 2222 октября

We can be convinced that we must not condemn a brother if only because hundreds of times we have had, and still have, to repent of having condemned a brother, but never of not having condemned him.

  • November 66 ноября

To judge our neighbor is unreasonable: it serves no purpose whatever, and meanwhile it harms both ourselves and others.
