Self-love that goes beyond certain limits is a mental illness. Carried to its highest degree, it shows itself as the mental illness called megalomania.

    1. People think that self-renunciation infringes on freedom. Such people do not know that only self-renunciation gives us true freedom, by freeing us from ourselves, from the slavery of our depravity. Our passions are the cruelest of tyrants; you need only give in to them, and you will be in the cruelest slavery, without the strength to draw a free breath. Only self-renunciation delivers us from this slavery.

    Fénelon.

    What changed

Fénelon’s question, whether we fear being “too free from self,” becomes the statement that only self-renunciation gives true freedom.

Do we fear being too free from self, from the caprices of our pride, the violence of our passions, and the tyranny of the. world ?
Besides this, our own passions are worse than the most cruel tyrants. If we obey them only in part, we must maintain a continual contest with them, and have hardly time to breathe.

VI); in Follen's English, Twenty-third Day «On the Yoke of Jesus Christ» and Twenty-fourth Day «On False Liberty», pp. 277–278.

Freely reworked from two consecutive days of Fénelon's meditations. From the 23rd come the liberty sacrificed to God that gives back another, unknown to the world, and being freed from ourselves and from the violence of our passions; from the 24th, the passions worse than the cruelest tyrants, which never let us breathe, and the slavery that men call liberty. The opening sentence and the word "self-renunciation" are Tolstoy's: Fénelon speaks of giving one's liberty to God.

    2. Self-love is needed only to preserve the separate life of the body, and when it shows itself within these limits, it is natural and legitimate. But when reason, which by its very nature is meant to destroy all separateness, is used to affirm that separateness, then self-love becomes harmful and tormenting.

    3. Complete renunciation of self is the divine life; self-love unbroken by anything is a life lower than an animal’s. The reasonable life of a human being is a gradual passage from the animal life to the divine life.

    4. Impartiality is as rare as justice. Personal interest is an inexhaustible source of self-deception for the sake of self-justification. The number of people who wish to see the truth is extremely small. Fear of the truth holds sway over people, unless the truth is of use to them. People of worldly philosophy regard truth as something that may be admitted into life, or equally may not be. And so in this way the prejudice of self-regard defends all the prejudices of thought that follow from this ruse of egoism. The only progress mankind desires is the increase of pleasures. Self-sacrifice, that pleasure of great souls, has never been the law of society.

“Convenient illusions” become “self-deception for the sake of self-justification.”

Impartiality and objectivity are as rare as justice, of which they are but two special forms. Self-interest is an inexhaustible source of convenient illusions.
And thus a prejudice of self-love protects all the prejudices of the understanding, which are themselves the result of a stratagem of the _ego_.
Sacrifice, which is the passion of great souls, has never been the law of societies.

Condensed and changed. Tolstoy drops objectivity ("impartiality and objectivity are as rare as justice, of which they are but two forms"); Amiel's "convenient illusions" become self-deceptions for self-justification; for "self-interest is the principle of the common philosophy, or truth is made for us and not we for truth" Tolstoy puts that people of worldly philosophy treat truth as something that may or may not be admitted into life. He leaves out the humiliating fact the majority will not admit, and the sentences on humanity persecuting those who disturbed its peace and improving only against its will, and he makes "sacrifice" self-sacrifice.

Translation note. «Самолюбие» here, a word apart from the day’s «себялюбие» (self-love), is rendered “self-regard”.

    5. Self-satisfied thinkers and artists who live for their own enjoyment do not exist. The one sure sign that a calling is present is self-denial, the sacrifice of oneself in order to bring out the power that has been put into a person for the benefit of other people. Spiritual fruit, too, is not born without pangs.

To teach how many bugs there are in the world, to examine the spots on the sun, to write novels and operas — this can be done for personal ends; but to teach people their good, which lies not only in renouncing oneself and in serving others, and to express this teaching with force, is impossible without self-renunciation.

It is not for nothing that Christ died on the cross, not for nothing that the sacrifice of suffering conquers all.

Translation note. Tolstoy’s own words from What Then Must We Do? (1886), chapter XXXVII, revised for the Circle. There the good of people is one “which lies wholly in renouncing oneself and serving others” («которое всё только в отвержении от себя»); the Circle prints «которое не только», “which lies not only”, translated here as printed.

The difficulty of the necessary freeing of oneself from self-love lies in this: self-love is a necessary condition of life. It is necessary and natural in childhood, but it must weaken and disappear as reason grows clearer and, above all, as true love shows itself. Children feel no reproach of conscience for their self-love, but as reason grows clearer and love shows itself, self-love weakens more and more, and as death draws near it must disappear entirely.
