Human life is good only to the extent that it is the fulfillment of the law of life, the law of God.

Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the commas; it is set here as one span.

    1. Evil, in the form of death and suffering, is visible to us only when we take the law of our carnal, animal existence for the law of our life. Only when we, being human, descend to the level of animals, only then do both death and suffering become terrible to us. Death and suffering, like bugbears, hoot at us from every side and drive us onto the one road open to us, the road of human life: the fulfillment of the law of God, which is expressed in love. Death and suffering are nothing but our transgressions of this law. But if we live wholly by the law of God, there is no death for us, there is no suffering.

Translation note. «Пугала» are scarecrows, things set up to frighten, given here as “bugbears”; «ухают» and «загоняют», “hoot” and “drive”, are said of beaters driving game.

    2. What is to be done when everything forsakes us: health, joy, affection, freshness of feeling, memory, the capacity for work; when it seems to us that the sun is growing cold and life seems to be losing all its charms? How are we to go on when there is no hope at all? Stupefy ourselves, or turn to stone? The answer is always the same: the merging of our own will with the will of God. Come what may, if you feel peace of conscience, if you feel reconciled and in your place. Be what you ought to be — the rest is God’s affair. And even if there were no God of love, but only the law of all things, duty would still be the answer to the mystery.

The passage is Amiel’s entry of 25 January 1868, but his French was not obtained, so it rests on Ward’s English and is only a candidate.

In English · Mrs Humphry Ward, 1885
What is to become of us without hope? Must we either harden or forget?
Be what you ought to be; the rest is God’s affair.
And supposing that there were no good and holy God, nothing but universal being, the law of the all, an ideal without hypostasis or reality, duty would still be the key of the enigma, the pole-star of a wandering humanity.

A likely source, not certain. Fragments d’un journal intime, 25 January 1868.

The passage is Amiel’s entry of 25 January 1868; the French (vol. II of the Fragments) was not obtained in a usable scan, so it rests on Ward’s English, hence candidate. Where Ward has "keep close to duty", Tolstoy has «слияние своей воли с волей бога»; he leaves out God’s care for his glory and "another life or annihilation", and shortens the ending.

    3. The fulfillment of duty has nothing in common with personal pleasure. Duty has its own particular law, its own particular court, and if we wished to mix duty and personal pleasure so as to live on that mixture, duty and pleasure would at once separate from each other of their own accord.

    After Kant.

    What changed

“The majesty of duty” becomes “the fulfillment of duty,” “enjoyment of life” becomes “personal pleasure,” and Kant’s image of a medicine for the sick soul becomes a mixture to “live on.”

The majesty of duty has nothing to do with enjoyment of life; it has its special law and its special tribunal, and though the two should be never so well shaken together to be given well mixed, like medicine, to the sick soul, yet they will soon separate of themselves; …

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Kritik der praktischen Vernunft (1788), Part I, Book I, ch. III (Von den Triebfedern der reinen praktischen Vernunft), as excerpted in Raoul Richter, Kant-Aussprüche (1901), Kant-Aussprüche no. 141.

The first part of Kant's sentence. Changed: "the venerableness of duty" (die Ehrwürdigkeit der Pflicht) becomes «Исполнение долга» (the doing of duty); "enjoyment of life" (Lebensgenuß) becomes «личным наслаждением» (personal pleasure); Kant's image, duty and pleasure "shaken together to be handed, mixed, as a medicine to the sick soul" (gleichsam als Arzneimittel, der kranken Seele zuzureichen), becomes «чтобы жить этой смесью» (to live by this mixture). Kant's close (if they do not separate, duty has no effect, and the moral life perishes) is left out.

We know the law of God both from the traditions of all religions and from our own consciousness, when it is not darkened by passions and the deceptions of thought, and we can come to know it by applying this law to life: all the demands of the law that give us an inalienable good, all these are the demands of the true law.
