To judge our neighbor is unreasonable: it serves no purpose whatever, and meanwhile it harms both ourselves and others.

    1. When, at the end of an evening gathering, one of the guests took his leave and went out, those who remained began to discuss him and said many bad things about him. The same happened with the second to leave. And so all the guests departed, down to the last one. “Allow me to stay the night,” said this last one. “I heard how all those who left fared, and I am afraid for myself.”

    2. The proverb says: of the dead speak well or be silent. I think that, on the contrary, we should not speak ill of the living, because it may hurt them and spoil their relations with the living; but about the dead, of whom it is customary to tell flattering lies, nothing prevents us from speaking the whole truth.

    3. Judging others is especially bad because the very judgment of people’s failings which, spoken to their faces, might be useful to them, is hidden from those who might need it, and is told to those whom it harms, rousing in them ill feeling toward the one who is judged.

    4. Be strict with yourselves and indulgent toward others, and you will have no enemies.

    Chinese wisdom [Confucius].

    5. We stop judging others as soon as we have conquered ourselves.

    6. I knew an old man who deliberately drew out his words, so that several seconds passed between one word and the next. He did this on purpose, for fear of sinning in word.

    7. We are all bad, and so everything we judge in others we shall always find in ourselves. Let us, then, forgive one another. The one way for us to live in peace is mutual forgiveness.

The word is the expression of thought, and thought is the manifestation of divine power; and so the word must be fit for what it expresses. It may be indifferent, but it cannot and must not be the expression of evil.
