Despondency is a state of soul in which we see no meaning either in our own life or in the whole life of the world.

    1. There are people who, when they are despondent or irritated, admire their own state and are even proud of it. This is just as if, having let go of the reins of a horse that is bolting downhill with you, you were to start lashing it with the whip as well.

    2. Despondency and ill humor are not only a torment to those around them, but contagious too; and so decent people, just as they do in private everything that would be unpleasant to others, also give way in private to their despondency and irritation.

    3. To think that external causes affect our state of mind is a harmful and very common error. The state of the body, fatigue, hunger, and illness affect the state of mind of those who are conscious of the spiritual foundation of their life only in that they weaken their activity; they do not change its direction. Only people who live by the external life alone (children, irreligious people) change their whole relation to life because of external causes: they fall into despondency or irritation, and condemn and hate what they once praised and loved.

    4. Do not trust yourself when everything appears to you in a gloomy light, when everyone seems to be at fault, when you want to say, and even to do, something evil to everyone. Look on yourself in such a state as on someone who is drunk; undertake nothing, and wait for this state to pass. The less you do while you are in this state, the sooner it will pass: this self-restraint is as necessary as sleep is for someone who is drunk.

    5. Most people who are called evil became so only because they took their ill humor for their legitimate state and gave themselves up to it.

    6. When the world seems ugly, people unpleasant and unkind, and all their doings stupid and vile, hasten to make use of this state by turning your attention on yourself, and you will see in yourself what you did not see before, and this acknowledgment of your own vileness will be of benefit to you.

    7. There are few misfortunes with no way out; despair is more deceptive than hope.

    Vauvenargues.

Word for word: 'Peu de malheurs sont sans ressource' (few misfortunes are without remedy) is «Мало бывает несчастий безысходных». The Circle repeats Tolstoy's Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), March 15; the commentary of Jubilee vol. 40 says its Vauvenargues for that day came from the «Иллюстрированный настольный календарь т-ва «Просвещение» на 1902 год», not online. Gilbert prints the maxim in square brackets, his mark for the nearly two hundred maxims he published for the first time. Not in the Wikisource text of maxims 1–330 or in Rusanov's Russian selection (Jubilee vol. 40). No public-domain English found.

    8. Never be despondent.

    9. It is our duty to be happy; if we are unhappy, we are to blame.

    10. It seems to me that we should make it our first rule to be happy and content. We should be ashamed of our discontent as of a bad deed, and know that if something is going wrong in my life or within me, I must not tell others about it or complain, but try as quickly as I can to set right what is going wrong.

    11. Help me, Lord, to rejoice without ceasing, fulfilling your will in purity, humility, and love.

    12. Both physical suffering and periods of low spirits are the lot of life here, and we must wait until the one and the other pass, or until this life itself does.

When you feel discontent with everything around you and with your own situation, withdraw, as a snail into its shell, into the consciousness of your calling in the world, and wait for the time when the conditions that brought you into this state have passed, and you will again have the strength to do the work of your life.
