The kingdom of God is the realization among people of God’s law, in the measure in which it has been revealed to them.
1. What will become of destitution if everyone seeks first of all the kingdom of God and his righteousness? That is, if everyone, submitting willingly to the law of God, strives for the conscientious fulfillment of the duties this law imposes?
Destitution is the daughter of injustice, of covetousness, of a criminal contempt for the sacred duties of humanity — of a violation of them so general and so constant that we, through an appalling darkening of our conscience, have even grown used to considering destitution a necessary condition of the order of life. And so, thy kingdom come, O Lord; may thy law be the law of the world’s renewal; may nakedness not be the lot of three quarters of the human race; may the world be not the dwelling of embittered enemies who harm one another, but the dwelling of brothers eager to rush to one another’s help. May the sons of God, multiplying daily, unite to destroy evil, to overthrow the temple of Satan, and to build thy temple from its ruins.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Les Évangiles, traduction nouvelle, avec des notes et des réflexions à la fin de chaque chapitre (1846), The reflection after Matthew, chapter VI (Paris, 1846, second edition, p. 20).
The second half of the reflection on Matthew VI (seek first the kingdom of God), from 'Où seroit l'indigence' (where would want be) to its end, with one sentence left out: 'Chargez l'équité, la charité de la distribution des biens que la terre nous prodigue, et il y aura pour tous de la nourriture, des vêtements pour tous' (let equity and charity distribute the goods the earth lavishes on us, and there will be food and clothing for all). 'La faim et la nudité' (hunger and nakedness) becomes «нагота» (nakedness) alone. The scan reads 'si chacun cherchent' and 'delà cupidité' (OCR slips), so the excerpts begin inside those sentences. Tolstoy printed it again in (June 11, word for word) and, shorter, in Для души (1909). No English translation of Lamennais's Évangiles was found.
Translation note. “Seek first of all the kingdom of God and his righteousness” is Matthew 6:33. The prayer opens with the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:10) in its old Church wording, «да приидет царствие твое», so the English has “thy kingdom come” and keeps “thy” through the prayer.
2. Only then will it be possible to say with full justification that the kingdom of God has come to us, when the necessity of the passage of church faith into a universal rational religion is openly acknowledged. Let the complete realization of this kingdom be infinitely remote from us; yet in this establishment of a universal rational religion in place of church faiths, as in a germ that develops and then multiplies, there is already contained all that is to enlighten the world and take possession of it.
In the life of the world thousands of years are as one day. We must work patiently at this realization and wait for it.

Source text: archive.orgIn English · J. W. Semple, 1838It may, however, be rightly asserted that tJie Kingdom of God has come, whenever the transition-principle above explained has taken public root in any country, and an observed approximation can be descried of churchfaith to a rational and universal religion, although its actual arrival may be still deemed incomputably distant.
The aforesaid principle affords the ground tending to this perfection, and does therefore, like a self-evolving and ever-onward forth-fecundifying seed, comprehend all that is one day to illuminate and govern the world.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Die Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der bloßen Vernunft (1793), Book III, Division I, § VII, joined to a note of Kant's (Reflexionen zur Anthropologie, ed. Erdmann, no. 678), both as excerpted in Raoul Richter, Kant-Aussprüche (1901), Kant-Aussprüche nos. 255 and 253 (Richter's register: Religion i. d. Gr., Hartenstein VI, 220; Reflexionen I, 213–214); Erdmann, Reflexionen Kants zur kritischen Philosophie I.1 (Leipzig, 1882), no. 678, pp. 213–214; Semple (1838), Book III, Section VII, p. 160.
Two passages Richter prints a page apart, joined in reverse order, the first of them changed. Kant (Religion, Book III): “Man kann mit Grunde sagen: daß das Reich Gottes zu uns gekommen sei, wenn auch nur das Prinzip des allmählichen Überganges des Kirchenglaubens zur allgemeinen Vernunftreligion … allgemein und irgendwo auch öffentlich Wurzel gefaßt hat” (one may say with reason that the kingdom of God has come to us even if only the principle of the gradual transition of church faith to the universal religion of reason has taken root universally and somewhere also publicly). Tolstoy: «Тогда только можно будет с полным основанием сказать, что пришло к нам царствие божие, когда открыто признана будет необходимость перехода церковной веры во всеобщую разумную религию» (only then will one be able to say with full reason that the kingdom of God has come to us, when the necessity of the transition of church faith into a universal rational religion is openly acknowledged). So Kant's “even if only” (as soon as) becomes “only then … when”; “the principle of the gradual transition” becomes «необходимость перехода» (the necessity of the transition); “has taken root” becomes «открыто признана будет» (will be openly acknowledged); and “und so zu einem (göttlichen) ethischen Staat auf Erden” (and so to a divine ethical state on earth) is left out. Kept: though its actual establishment lies infinitely far from us, in it, as in a developing and then again seeding germ, lies the whole that is one day to enlighten and rule the world; Tolstoy puts «в этом установлении всеобщей разумной религии, вместо церковных вер» (in this establishment of a universal rational religion in place of church faiths) for “in ihm” (in it, the principle), leaves out “den Grund einer kontinuierlichen Annäherung” (the ground of a continual approach) and “(unsichtbarer Weise)” (invisibly), and writes «овладеть» (take possession of) for “beherrschen” (rule). His last paragraph is the close of Kant's note on the wise teacher who brought the kingdom of God near (Richter no. 253, Erdmann's no. 678, the edition block): “Im ganzen Weltall sind tausend Jahr ein Tag” (in the whole universe a thousand years are a day) becomes «В жизни мира тысячи лет как один день» (in the life of the world thousands of years are as one day), and “an diesem Unternehmen” (at this undertaking) «над этим осуществлением» (at this realization). The note's first part is July 14's next thought (7-14.3). Semple's English of the Religion passage is free; there is no public-domain English of the note.
Translation note. Compare 2 Peter 3:8 (KJV: “one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day”); the Russian has “thousands of years.”
3. The kingdom of God on earth is the final goal and the desire of humanity (“Thy kingdom come”). Christ brought this kingdom near to us, but people did not understand it and set up among us the kingdom of the priests, not the kingdom of God.

Kant's note, closely, with its last words turned. Kept: the kingdom of God on earth is man's last destination and wish (Thy kingdom come); Christ brought it near, but he was not understood. Changed: “die letzte Bestimmung” (the last destination) becomes «конечная цель» (the final aim); “des Menschen Wunsch” (man's wish) «желание человечества» (mankind's wish); “das Reich der Priester” (the kingdom of the priests) «царство попов», with the colloquial, slighting word for priests; and “nicht das Gottes in uns” (not that of God within us) becomes «воздвигли у нас царство попов, а не царство бога» (they set up among us the kingdom of priests, not the kingdom of God): “in uns” (within us) moves to the priests' kingdom as «у нас» (among us), and God's kingdom loses its place within. Richter prints the note with Erdmann's wording (intermediary); the next note, no. 253 in Richter, closes July 14's previous thought (7-14.2). There is no public-domain English of the Reflexionen.
Translation note. «Попы» is the everyday, slightly scornful word for priests. «Не поняли его» can also be read “did not understand him,” of Christ.
4. The time is coming when ritual and verbal divine service, which draws people to itself by its poetry and splendor, and the coercive social order, which is held to be an inevitable condition of life, will be displaced by the understanding of the life of man. The time of the kingdom of heaven is coming, the time of the kingdom of God on earth, when our very life, in our deeds, will be wholly filled with the conscious fulfillment of God’s law.
One main thing is required; what is required is to understand religion in its true meaning: not in the sense of sorcery and the hoodwinking of people, but in the sense of true science, of the understanding of the life of man — to understand it so as to mean by divine service not something mysterious, supernatural, which cannot be done without a priest, without grace, but to understand by divine service love for God and one’s neighbor, service to one’s neighbor, activity for the good of one’s neighbor, for the common good — to understand by divine service the doing of good.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. (printed Burgas, then Moscow, 1920), pp. 81–82 of the Moscow printing.
Two sentences and a third of Arkhangelsky's, the first reordered, the end of the second replaced. First paragraph: the time is coming when ritual, verbal worship, drawing us by its poetry and splendor, and the violent social order that seems inevitable to us, will be displaced by understanding of man's life; Tolstoy writes «людей» (people) for “нас” (us), «считающееся неизбежным условием жизни» (held to be an inevitable condition of life) for “кажущееся в наших глазах неизбежным” (that seems inevitable in our eyes), and the future «будут вытеснены» (will be displaced) for “вытесняется” (is displaced). Replaced: the life of the kingdom of God on earth “должна наполниться вся сознательным возвеличением и прославлением Божества, безпрерывной поэзией истинного богослужения, восторг которого чувствует в себе человек, исполняя заповедь Божию…” (must be filled wholly with conscious exaltation and glorifying of the Deity, with the unceasing poetry of true worship, whose rapture a man feels in keeping God's commandment, helping his neighbor, saving the perishing, fulfilling Christ's covenant of love) becomes «вся наполнится сознательным исполнением закона бога» (will be filled wholly with the conscious fulfilling of God's law). Second paragraph, close: religion is to be understood not as sorcery and the hoodwinking of people but as science, the understanding of man's life, so that worship means not something mysterious that cannot be done without a priest and without grace, but love of God and neighbor, service of one's neighbor, work for the good of one's neighbor and the common good: worship as doing good. Tolstoy writes «значении» (meaning) for “смысле” (sense), «мороченья» for “обморочения” (both hoodwinking), «истинной науки» (true science) for “науки” (science), adds «сверхъестественное» (supernatural), and leaves out “по-божьи” (in God's way) and “живую личную … убеждения” (living, personal … of conviction) before «деятельность» (work). «На каждый день» (tolstoy block) is closer to Arkhangelsky in places («нас», «кажущееся неизбежным в глазах наших», «живую личную деятельность») and ends the first paragraph with «беспрерывным богослужением, т.-е. истинным служением Богу» (unceasing worship, that is, true service of God). Tolstoy read the work in manuscript; it was printed only in 1920 (Jubilee vol. 42 commentary), so a difference may be the author's later revision. The 1920 printing is quoted from a microfilm OCR with its errors («кажз^щееся» for «кажущееся»); a page number falls inside the second sentence, so it is given in two excerpts. No English translation is known.
Translation note. «Богослужение», literally “service of God,” is “divine service” here, to keep its tie to «служение ближнему», “service to one’s neighbor.”
The kingdom of God is within you. And therefore seek the kingdom of God within yourselves, and everything else will come about just as we could wish.
Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the comma; it is set here as one span. The first sentence is Luke 17:21. The move from “you” to “we” in the last clause is in the Russian.
