Детский возраст есть возраст, подлежащий внушению. И потому самое важное в воспитании — это выбор внушений, могущих влиять на ребенка.
Childhood is the age subject to suggestion. And so the most important thing in education is the choice of the suggestions that can influence a child.
1. В настоящее время большинство людей только воображают себе, что они, исповедуя христианство, держатся христианской нравственности. В действительности они следуют только языческой нравственности, и эту нравственность ставят идеалом воспитания молодого поколения.
1. In our time most people only imagine that in professing Christianity they keep to Christian morality. In reality they follow only pagan morality, and it is this morality that they set up as the ideal in educating the young generation.
2. Люди более всего восприимчивы к внушению в детском возрасте. Рассуждение не имеет на них 1/1000 того влияния, которое имеет на них пример.
И потому тщетны и смешны все проповеди о поведении, читаемые детям, когда они на примере видят обратное проповеди.
2. People are most susceptible to suggestion in childhood. Reasoning has not a thousandth of the influence on them that example has.
And so all the sermons on conduct that are read to children are futile and ridiculous when the example they see is the opposite of what is preached.
3. A child’s religion depends on the conduct of his parents, not on their spoken instructions. The inward and unconscious ideal that moves their life, their faith — this is what influences the child; their words, their reproofs, their punishments, even their outbursts, are to him nothing but accidents; but their faith he divines and feels by instinct.
The child sees what we are through what we wish to seem; hence his reputation as a physiognomist.
That is why the first principle of education is this: educate yourself; and the first rule to follow if you would have command of a child’s will is: take command of your own.
From Fragments d'un journal intime · shortened by Tolstoy .
Original · FrenchLa religion de l'enfant dépend de la manière d'être, et non de la manière de parler de sa mère et de son père.
L'enfant voit ce que nous sommes à travers ce que nous voulons être ; de là sa réputation de physionomiste.
Voilà pourquoi le premier principe de l'éducation, c'est : Élève-toi toimême ; et la première règle à suivre pour s'emparer de la volonté d'un enfant, c'est : Deviens maître de la tienne.
Source text: archive.orgIn English · Mrs. Humphry Ward, 1885The religion of a child depends on what its mother and its father are, and not on what they say.
The child sees what we are, behind what we wish to be. Hence his reputation as a physiognomist.
This is why the first principle of education is: train yourself; and the first rule to follow if you wish to possess yourself of a child’s will is: master your own.

The end of the 6 January 1853 entry on mothers and children. Tolstoy leaves out the sentences between (the child as diplomat and as magnifying mirror). Amiel's 'manner of being, not manner of speaking' becomes 'way of acting, not spoken instruction'; the parents' words and punishments, which Amiel calls 'only a comedy and a thunderclap', become 'mere accidents' («случайности»); «leur culte» becomes «вера их».
4. Старшие, может быть, и толкуют детям, что не следует быть жестокими к животным и вообще ко всем слабым существам. Но стоит только ребенку войти в кухню, и он сейчас же увидит убитых и ощипанных кур и гусей. Какую же пользу могут принести детям прекрасные рассуждения о нравственности, которым так резко противоречат варварские и безнравственные поступки взрослых, совершающиеся у них на глазах?
4. Their elders may well explain to children that one must not be cruel to animals, or to any weak creatures at all. But a child has only to step into the kitchen to see at once the slaughtered and plucked hens and geese. What good, then, can fine discourses on morality do children, so sharply contradicted as they are by the barbarous and immoral deeds of grown-ups done before their very eyes?
From Das Seelenleben, oder die Naturgeschichte des Menschen · shortened by Tolstoy .

Gustav (von) Struve (1805-1870), the Baden revolutionary of 1848 and vegetarian writer, as the Jubilee index has it. Tolstoy keeps the kitchen (Williams: "Pigeons, Hens, and Geese slaughtered and plucked", Tolstoy: hens and geese) and the closing question, and drops the street of hung carcasses and the slaughter-house between them, and the remark that men who abuse their power over animals do the same to weaker men. Tolstoy probably read it in the Russian translation of Williams, «Этика пищи» (Posrednik, 1893), which the Jubilee commentary lists, or in T. Tolstaya's vegetarian anthology (1903). The German was not checked word for word: the scans of Das Seelenleben (1873 ed.), Pflanzenkost (1869) and Mandaras Wanderungen consulted have no searchable text.
5. Уменьшение потребностей, — вот что следовало бы внушать во что бы то ни стало юношеству и для чего нужно бы стараться закалить его. Чем меньше потребностей, тем счастливей — старая, но далеко не признанная истина.
5. The lessening of our needs — this is what ought to be instilled in the young at all costs, and to this end we should try to harden them. The fewer our needs, the happier we are — an old truth, but far from a recognized one.

Both sentences, closely. Lichtenberg wants youth "strengthened" (stärken) for it; Tolstoy says "hardened"; "very much misjudged truth" becomes "a truth far from acknowledged".
Translation note. «Внушать» is the verb of the day’s «внушение», “suggestion”; here it is used in its everyday sense, “instill”.
6. Склонность к приятной жизни для человека хуже всех бедствий в жизни. Поэтому в высшей степени важно, чтобы дети приучались еще с юных лет работать.
6. For man, the inclination to a pleasant life is worse than all the calamities of life. It is therefore of the highest importance that children be accustomed to work from their earliest years.

Both sentences of Richter no. 174, closely; "the propensity to ease" (Hang zur Gemächlichkeit) becomes "the inclination to a pleasant life". The English is from the 1906 printing of Churton's translation.
7. Для детей важнее всего приучить их к умеренности, простоте жизни, труду и милосердию. Но как же приучить их к этому, когда дети видят, что родители дорожат роскошью и увеличением ее, предпочитают праздность труду и живут в избытке среди людей нуждающихся.
7. With children, the most important thing is to accustom them to moderation, simplicity of life, work and mercy. But how can one accustom them to this when they see their parents prizing luxury and its increase, preferring idleness to work, and living in plenty among people in need?
Всё нравственное воспитание детей сводится к доброму примеру. Живите хорошо, или хоть старайтесь жить хорошо, и вы по мере вашего успеха в хорошей жизни хорошо воспитаете детей.
All the moral education of children comes down to a good example. Live well, or at least try to live well, and in the measure that you succeed in living well you will bring up your children well.
