Christianity is true for the very reason that, in answering the most abstract questions, it resolves by that very answer the most practical questions of life as well. It establishes the kingdom of God in the spiritual world of each person and in the social life of people.

    1. Ask these millions of people who call themselves Christians what Christianity is, and they will answer you that to be a Christian means to adhere to a certain teaching. And yet those who profess this teaching all disagree among themselves. Some say that one must believe in this way, others in another, and out of these disagreements arise accusations and hatred, even persecutions that go as far as bloodshed. If true Christianity lay in this, how could Christ be the liberator, the savior of the peoples, the one whom the human race awaited? But he himself gives us quite another idea of his work. He was sent to bring the good news to the poor; to heal hearts broken by suffering, torment, and oppression; to announce to the blind that they will see, that they will no longer be deprived of the light that their rulers deny them so that, brutalized in ignorance, they will bear the rulers’ yoke more patiently; to set free those whom fetters crush; to put freedom in the place of universal slavery. Such was the work of Jesus; but is that what is taught in his name? Has he whom the people longed for fulfilled what he was to fulfill? Have the poor heard the good news? Are the broken hearts healed? Do the blind see? Have the fetters been taken off the imprisoned? Are the captives set free? No, Christ is still on the cross, awaiting his apostles. Let them come, let them come quickly, for the sorrow is great, and eyes grow weary of looking to the east, awaiting the dawn of the year of the Lord.

The second paragraph of the reflection on Luke IV (Jesus reads Isaiah in the synagogue of Nazareth), translated closely with two cuts. Left out: 'Il est l'oint du Seigneur' (he is the Lord's anointed) and the clause after the good news to the poor, 'pour les relever de leur déchéance, les remettre en possession de l'héritage que la force inique leur avoit enlevé' (to raise them from their fall, to restore them to the inheritance that unjust force had taken from them); and the last item of Christ's mission, 'pour publier l'année du Seigneur, le jour de la rétribution, jour où … il y aura parmi les puissants de la terre une grande terreur, et une grande joie parmi les foibles' (to proclaim the year of the Lord, the day of retribution, when there will be great terror among the mighty of the earth and great joy among the weak). Small changes: 'le Désiré des nations' becomes «желанный народом» (the one the people desired); 'N'y a-t-il plus de fers à rompre et de captifs à délivrer?' becomes two questions, «Сняты ли оковы с заключенных? Освобождены ли узники?»; 'Je vous le dis' (I tell you) becomes «Нет» (no); the eyes weary of 'regarder à l'horizon pour y découvrir l'aube qui annoncera le commencement de l'année du Seigneur' (looking to the horizon for the dawn that will announce the beginning of the year of the Lord) look «на восток, ожидая зарю лета господня» (to the east, awaiting the dawn of the Lord's year). Earlier months' traces found no public-domain English of Lamennais's Évangiles.

Translation note. The account of Christ’s work follows Luke 4:18–19, which the KJV gives as “to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” «Благая весть», “the good news,” is the Russian for the gospel.

    2. Religion is not the truth because holy men preached it, but holy men preached it because it is the truth.

    What changed

“The Evangelists and Apostles” become “holy men,” so what Lessing says of the authors of the Gospels is said of holy men in general, and “taught” becomes “preached.”

X (Berlin, 1839), p. 10 (Gegensätze, opening remarks) and p. 154 (Axiomata IX); Bernard, Letters on Bibliolatry (1862), Axiom IX, p. 45.

Lessing's antithesis with its subject changed. Lessing: “Die Religion ist nicht wahr, weil die Evangelisten und Apostel sie lehrten: sondern sie lehrten sie, weil sie wahr ist” (religion is not true because the Evangelists and Apostles taught it, but they taught it because it is true). Tolstoy: «Религия не потому истина, что ее проповедывали святые люди, а святые люди проповедывали ее потому, что она истина» (religion is not truth because holy men preached it, but holy men preached it because it is truth). “Die Evangelisten und Apostel” (the Evangelists and Apostles) becomes «святые люди» (holy men), so the Christian Scriptures' authors become the holy men of any faith, and “lehrten” (taught) becomes «проповедывали» (preached); the Circle prints the thought in italics. Lessing first wrote the sentence in the editor's opening remarks to the fragments of the Unnamed (1777), where it goes on that the written traditions must be explained from religion's inner truth and cannot give it an inner truth it lacks; he repeated it alone as the ninth of his Axiomata (1778), against Pastor Goeze (both in the original). Tolstoy printed it again, with «истинна» (true) for «истина», in «На каждый день» (1 January, no. 8) and «Путь жизни» (tolstoy). His listed sources for Lessing, Blumenau's Lessing-Perlen and Posrednik's «Избранные мысли Шиллера и Лессинга» (1903), were not found online. Bernard's English translates the Axiomata.

Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the commas; it is set here as one span.

    3. All human calamities come from the absence of religion. Without religion it is impossible to live. Only religion gives a definition of good and bad, and therefore only on the basis of religion can we make a choice among all the things we may wish to do. Only religion destroys egoism; only in consequence of religion’s demands can we live not for ourselves. Only religion destroys the fear of death; only religion gives us the meaning of life; only religion establishes the equality of people; only religion frees us from all outward constraints.

It is impossible not to believe a spiritual teaching whose application brings about the simplest practical good of all.

There is no greater test of the truth of a teaching.

And such is the Christian teaching.
