Perfecting oneself is natural to us if only because, if we are truthful, we can never be satisfied with ourselves.
1. Man must develop his dispositions to good. Providence did not place them in man fully formed; they are only dispositions. To make himself better — this is what man must strive for and must attain.
Kant.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Über Pädagogik (1803), as excerpted in Raoul Richter, Kant-Aussprüche (Leipzig, Insel, 1901/1909), Kant-Aussprüche no. 172.
Taken from Richter's anthology, which Tolstoy owned. He drops "and without the distinction of morality" and the clause about producing morality in oneself if one is evil, keeping "to make oneself better" as the goal.
2. “The root of evil is ignorance of the truth,” said the Buddha.
From this same root grows the tree of error, with its fruits of suffering, counted by the thousands.
Against ignorance there is only one remedy — knowledge. And true knowledge can be reached only through personal perfecting. It follows that the remedy for social evil too can be reached only by men taking up a higher view of the world and, having become better, acting in accordance with that higher view.
And so all attempts to better the life of the world are vain until men themselves become better; the bettering of each individual man is the surest means of bettering the life of the world.

3. He who asks of life only the bettering of his own being, in the sense of inward contentment and religious submission, is less exposed than anyone to the danger of failing to fulfill the calling of his life.

Close. Tolstoy folds «le perfectionnement moral» into «улучшения своего существа» and turns «manquer la vie» (to miss life) into «не исполнить призвания своей жизни» (to fail the calling of one's life), a slight shift toward his own vocabulary.
4. A Christian cannot be only a teacher or only a pupil; he is always both together, and so he always goes forward, and there is no end for him to perfecting.
Let each of you think of himself as nothing other than a schoolboy and a pupil. Do not think that you are too old to learn, that you have come to full maturity and development, that your character and soul are already what they ought to be and cannot be better. For a Christian there is no finished course: he is a pupil to the very grave.

The second paragraph is Gogol nearly word for word ('силы твои достигнули' -> 'ты дошел до'; 'получили уже настоящую форму' -> 'уже таковы, какими должны быть'; 'вечно ученик' dropped). The opening sentence (always teacher and pupil at once) is Tolstoy's summary drawn from the letter's title. Possibly via Orlov's «Гоголь как учитель жизни» (1888), in the Jubilee list.
5. A thinking man feels a grief, of which the shallow man has no notion, that may perhaps even lead to the corruption of morals: namely, when he reflects on the misfortunes that weigh so heavily on the human race and, seemingly having no hope of anything better, feels discontent with the Providence that governs the order of the world. But not to condemn Providence (even if it has appointed us so hard a road now, in our earthly life) is of the highest importance: partly so that we do not lose courage amid the burdens of life, partly so that, by putting the blame on Providence, we do not lose sight of our own guilt, which is perhaps the only cause of all our ills.

6. As you break yourself of bad habits, so you can and should break yourself of selfishness. When you want to increase your pleasure, when you want to show yourself off, to win others’ love — stop. If you do not feel like doing anything for others, do not; only do nothing for yourself beyond what is unavoidably needed.
