At the highest point of our consciousness we are alone. This solitude is strange and unfamiliar, and it seems hard to bear. Those who lack reason escape the weight of being conscious of this solitude in diversions, and at once come down from this highest point to the lowest; those who have reason keep themselves at this height by prayer.
1. The relation to God, the one he wants of us, is the constant fulfilling of his will in our lives. But the interests of life, our passions, constantly, every minute, draw us away from it. And so, conscious of this, we have recourse to the outward, verbal expression of our relation to God, to prayer, trying to call up in ourselves a living consciousness of our dependence on God. Such prayer reminds us of our sins and our duties, and saves us from temptations, if in moments of temptation we manage to call up in ourselves the mood of prayer.
2. Personality is a limitation, and so God, however he may be understood, is not a person. Yet prayer is an address to God.
How, then, are we to address what is impersonal?
Astronomers know that what moves in their field of view is not the stars of the vault of heaven but the earth on which they stand with their observatory and telescope; and yet they record not the movement of the earth but the movement of the stars. It cannot be otherwise. It is just the same in prayer. God is not a person. But I am a person, and so I cannot express my relation to God otherwise than as to a personal God, though I know that he cannot be a person.
Translation note. «Личность» is both “personality” and “a person”; the English needs both words for Tolstoy’s one.
3. Someone hopelessly buried in a mine, freezing in the ice, dying of hunger at sea or in solitary confinement, or simply dying, gone deaf and blind — what would such a person have to live by for the time that remains, if there were no prayer?
4. How good it is for a man when he has worn himself out in the vain search for the good in worldly life and, weary, stretches out his hands to God.

Pascal's 'the vain search for the true good' becomes 'the vain search for good in worldly life', and the arms are stretched out to God, not to 'the Liberator' (Christ). Pascal's 'it is good … in order to' becomes 'how good it is for a man when …'.
People can live without prayer only when either their passions have taken full possession of them, or their whole life is the service of God. But for those who are struggling with their passions and are still far from fulfilling what they consider their duty, prayer is a necessary condition of life.
