People think that if they call the crime of murder “war,” murder will cease to be murder, a crime.

    1. Christ can be denied in different ways: first, one can blaspheme crudely, mock at greatness — but this way is not dangerous. Religion is too dear to people for anyone’s mockery to take it from them. But there is another way: to call Christ Lord and not keep his commandments; to stifle free thought with his words, and to cover, to sanctify with his name all the follies, errors, and sins of people. This second way is especially dangerous.

    Theodore Parker.

From The True Idea of a Christian Church, a discourse at the installation of Theodore Parker … · shortened by Tolstoy .
    Theodore Parker’s own words
There are many ways in which Christ may be denied:--one is that of the bold blasphemer, who, out of a base and haughty heart mocks, scoffing at that manly man, and spits upon the nobleness of Christ!
Religion is so dear to men, no scoffing word can silence that, and the brave soul of this young Nazarene has made itself so deeply felt that scorn and mockery of him are but an icicle held up against the summer's sun.
There is another way to deny him, and that is:--to call him Lord, and never do his bidding; to stifle free minds with his words; and with the authority of his name to cloak, to mantle, screen and consecrate the follies, errors, sins of men! From this we have much to fear.

I, After 'But the churches do not lead men therein, for they have not his spirit'.

Parker's paragraph, shortened and plainer. The blasphemer 'who, out of a base and haughty heart mocks, scoffing at that manly man, and spits upon the nobleness of Christ' becomes 'one can crudely blaspheme, mock greatness'; 'There are few such deniers: my heart mourns for them. But they do little harm' becomes 'but such a way is not dangerous'. 'no scoffing word can silence that' becomes 'for anyone's mockery to take it from them', and the young Nazarene and the icicle against the summer's sun are left out. The second way is kept clause by clause ('to call him Lord, and never do his bidding; to stifle free minds with his words …'); 'From this we have much to fear' becomes 'This second way is especially dangerous'. Tolstoy reprinted it unchanged but for punctuation in «На каждый день» (18 April). No printable.

    2. It is not true that war against the foreigner is sacred; it is not true that the earth craves blood. The earth asks of heaven the water of its rivers and the pure dew of heaven’s clouds, not blood. War is cursed by God, and even by those who take part in it.

    Alfred de Vigny.

    What changed

The earth’s plea to heaven is moved before the curse and ends “not blood,” answering “the earth craves blood,” and the men who wage war “and who have a secret horror of it” become “those who take part in it.”

Tolstoy had quoted the passage at greater length as an epigraph to chapter VI of «Одумайтесь!» (1904), whose commentary in Jubilee vol. 36 names Vigny's book as its source; the Circle shortens that version. Against Vigny: 'divine' became «священна» (holy) already in 1904; the Circle drops 'malgré les paroles d'un sophiste' and 'même', and 'et qui ont d'elle une secrète horreur' (and who hold it in secret horror). It moves the earth's plea before the curse and adds to it «а не крови» ('not blood'), and Vigny's 'la terre ne crie au ciel que pour lui demander l'eau fraîche de ses fleuves' becomes «Земля просит у неба воды своих рек», without 'fraîche'.

    3. Only your iniquities have been a dividing wall between you and your God, and your sins have hidden the face of God from you, so that he does not hear: for your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips speak lies, your tongue utters falsehood. No one lifts his head for righteousness, and no one stands up for the truth; they trust in what is empty and speak lies; they conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity. Their works are works of sin, and their hands do violence; their feet run to evil, and they hasten to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of sin; desolation and ruin lie along their way; they do not know the way of peace, and there is no justice in their paths; they themselves have made their ways crooked; no one who walks in them knows peace. That is why justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us; we wait for light, and behold, darkness; we wait for brightness, but walk in gloom; we grope along the wall like the blind, and feel our way like the eyeless; at noon we stumble as at twilight; among the living we are like the dead.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Isaiah, 59:2–4, 6–10.

Tolstoy's Russian is not the Synodal: it is the translation he printed as the epigraph to chapter I of «Одумайтесь!» (1904), signed «Исаия, LIX 2—4, 6—10»; verse 5 and the first half of verse 6 are left out here too, though the Circle's signature says 2—10. That translation was not identified. Where the Circle departs from the 1904 epigraph it moves toward the Synodal: «никто не вступается за истину» (Synodal the same; 1904 «никто не судится по истине»), «они спешат на пролитие невинной крови» (Synodal the same; 1904 «спешат проливать невинную кровь»), and «между живыми как мертвецы» (Synodal «между живыми — как мертвые»; 1904 «в темноте, как мертвецы»). Also changed from 1904: «голову» for «голоса», «говорят ложь» for «говорят ложью», «лицо бога» for «лицо его», «сиянья» for «сияния». Against the Synodal the Circle keeps the 1904 wording: «были средостением» (were a dividing wall) for «произвели разделение», «закрыли лицо» for «отвращают лице», «не поднимает» for «не возвышает», «уповают» for «надеются», «зачинают беду и рождают беззаконие» for «зачинают зло и рождают злодейство», and «ощупываем стену, как слепые, и ощупью ходим, как безглазые» for «Осязаем, как слепые стену, и, как без глаз, ходим ощупью».

Translation note. Verse 5 and the first half of verse 6 are left out. Where Tolstoy has «средостением», a dividing wall, the KJV has “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God”; for his “No one lifts his head for righteousness” it has “None calleth for justice”.
