The Christian teaching is so clear that little children understand it in its true sense. Only people who wish to seem Christians and to be called Christians, but not to be Christians in reality, can fail to understand it.

    1. The Buddha said: a person who begins to live for the soul is like someone who brings a light into a dark house. The darkness at once disperses. Only persevere in such a life, and complete enlightenment will be accomplished in you.

    2. The people (I speak of the good, of those whom the corruption that comes from the ruling classes has not touched), freed from what Christ calls the blindness of riches, content with their daily bread, asking of the heavenly Father only what he gives the little birds, which neither sow nor reap — the people live the true life, the life of the heart, more than other men, sunk in the desires and cares of this world. That is why heroic deeds, self-sacrifice, must be sought in them, in the people. Take away the people — what will become of the precepts of duty, of that by which alone society holds together, of what makes up the greatness and strength of nations? When nations grow weak, who renews them, revives them, if not the common people? And if the disease is incurable, if the peoples must die, from what does the young shoot come that is destined to replace the old tree, if not, once again, from the people? And so it is to the people that Christ turns, and so the people recognize in him the messenger of the Father, glorify his name, proclaim his authority, submitting to it. But the princes of the church, the scribes, curse him and kill him. Yet, in spite of their violence and cunning, in spite of the execution, Christ has triumphed in the people; the people have founded his kingdom in the world, and by the people it will spread through the world; by the people the new life will be born whose divine seed the powers of violence would so like to stifle — powers already seized with terror at their approaching end.

The second half of Lamennais's reflection, translated closely, from 'The people, I mean the good' to the end; Tolstoy leaves out the opening on the poor widow and the rich man. 'The fascination of riches' becomes 'the blinding of riches'; the chief priests ('Princes des prêtres') become 'princes of the church', the elders are dropped, and so is 'crowns him King of the future'; 'the powers of the past' become 'violent powers'. No public-domain English of Les Évangiles was found.

Translation note. Matthew 13:22 and Mark 4:19, where the KJV has “the deceitfulness of riches”; Tolstoy’s word is «ослепление», “blindness”.

    3. We must beware of two equally pernicious superstitions: the superstition of the theologians, who teach that the essence of the Deity can be expressed in words, and the superstition of science, which supposes that the divine power can be explained by scientific research.

    John Ruskin.

    John Ruskin’s own words
And in these days you have to guard against the fatallest darkness of the two opposite Prides;--the Pride of Faith, which imagines that the nature of the Deity can be defined by its convictions; and the Pride of Science, which imagines that the energy of Deity can be explained by its analysis.
Of these, the first, the Pride of Faith, is now, as it has been always, the most deadly, …

The same two errors under other names. Ruskin's 'the two opposite Prides' becomes 'two equally pernicious superstitions'; 'the Pride of Faith, which imagines that the nature of the Deity can be defined by its convictions' becomes 'the superstition of the theologians, who teach that the essence of the deity can be expressed in words'; 'the Pride of Science, which imagines that the energy of Deity can be explained by its analysis' becomes 'the superstition of science, which supposes that divine power can be explained by scientific investigation'. 'Equally' departs from Ruskin, who goes on at once to call the Pride of Faith the more deadly of the two. Probably through Nikiforov's Russian selection (Posrednik, 1904).

    4. Christ’s last commandment expresses the whole of his teaching: “Love one another, as I have loved you, and by this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” He does not say, “if you believe this or that,” but “if you love.” Belief changes along with the ceaseless change of views and knowledge; it is bound to time and changes with time. Love is not temporal; it is unchanging, eternal.

Translation note. John 13:34–35, condensed, in Tolstoy’s wording; the KJV has “That ye love one another; as I have loved you … By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Not found. The Jubilee index lists «Ибрагим Кордовский» (vol. 41 p. 26, vol. 42 p. 539) with no identification; the second place is Tolstoy's unfinished popular version of the Circle, which repeats the line and the signature. No text was found that gives this saying to an Ibrahim of Cordova; Ibn Arabi's 'religion of love' was suggested as a lead and not checked.

Searched: Conway, The Sacred Anthology (1874) for 'religion', 'all living', 'Cordova', 'Ibrahim'; Jubilee vols. 40-42; Crosby's Broad-cast and Swords and Plowshares (saved); archive.org full text for 'Ibrahim of Cordova' (pre-1906 hits are Spanish history only), 'Ibrahim von Cordova', 'Ibrahim de Cordoue', 'my religion is love to all', 'love of all living' with 'my religion'.

For Christianity to be realized, nothing is lacking but the destruction of its perversion.
