Self-love is pride beginning. Pride is self-love left unchecked and in full bloom.

    1. Whoever does not loathe his self-love, that quality which makes him set himself above everything in the world, is wholly blinded, because it is contrary both to justice and to truth. Contrary to justice, because all desire the same thing, that is, to be above others; and contrary to truth, because it is impossible to be above everything in the world.

    Pascal.

    What changed

“Make himself God” becomes “set himself above everything in the world.”

He who hates not in himself his self-love, and that instinct which leads him to make himself God, is indeed blinded. Who does not see that there is nothing so opposed to justice and truth?

Pascal's 'the instinct which leads him to make himself God' becomes 'to put himself above everything in the world', and the reasoning is regrouped: unjust because all want the same; untrue because no one can be above all (Pascal: false that we deserve it, unjust and impossible to attain it). The closing sentence on the injustice we are born in is dropped.

    2. There are two sorts of men: some are righteous but think themselves sinners; others are sinners but think themselves righteous.

    Faithful; Tolstoy drops «ne … que» ('only').

    3. A human being is a fraction. The numerator is one’s outward qualities, of body and mind, compared with those of others; the denominator is one’s own estimate of oneself. To increase the numerator — one’s qualities — is not in our power; but to decrease the denominator — one’s opinion of oneself — and by this decrease to come nearer to perfection, is in the power of every one of us.

    4. The lighter and less dense a substance, the more space it takes up. Just as light are the merits that the proud ascribe to themselves.

    5. There are many men who set themselves up as teachers of others, when they themselves need only to begin learning.

    Eastern wisdom.

Mencius is only a candidate; the saying matches in sense, and its second half may come from another source.

A likely source, not certain. Mencius, IV.A.23.

Mencius: 'the trouble with men is that they like to be teachers of others' (Pauthier: 'to be the chiefs of others'). Tolstoy's version adds 'while they themselves need only begin to learn'; the match is in sense only and the added half may come from another saying. T. Tolstaya, «Восточная мудрость» (Посредник, 1903), in the Jubilee source list, is the likely Russian intermediary for the unsigned Eastern sayings; no online copy was found.

    6. The bad wheel always creaks the loudest. The empty ear of grain stands tallest. Such too is the nature of pride.

Translation note. «Пустой колос выше стоит»: a Russian proverb; the empty ear stands tall because it has no grain to bow it down.

    7. Our lower human nature is averse to humility; the human heart rebels at the mere thought of contempt, of humiliation, and we carefully hide everything that might lower us in the eyes of others; we try to hide what is bad in us even from ourselves; we do not want to see ourselves as we really are. The stronger this trait is in us, the more we need to struggle against it.

The chief task of life is perfection. And what perfection is possible when people, like all the proud, are fully satisfied with themselves?
