Life is not destroyed by death, only changed.

    1. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Do not waste your life in doubts and fears. Give yourself to the work of life, sure that doing well the duties of the present hour is the best preparation for the hours or ages that will follow it.

Our future state will always seem an illusion to our present state. What matters is not the length of life but its depth. The point is not to prolong life but to lift the soul out of time, as every high deed of the soul does; when we live fully, we do not ask ourselves about time.

Jesus explained nothing about eternal life, but his influence carried people out of time, and they felt themselves eternal.

    Emerson.

    Emerson’s own words
Sufficient to to-day are the duties of to-day. Don't waste life in doubts and fears; spend yourself on the work before you, well assured that the right performance of this hour's duties will be the best preparation for the hours or ages that follow it.
Future state is an illusion for the ever-present state. It is not length of life, but depth of life. It is not duration, but a taking of the soul out of time, as all high action of the mind does: when we are living in the sentiments we ask no questions about time.

Close except at the opening: Emerson's 'Sufficient to to-day are the duties of to-day' is replaced by the Slavonic Gospel verse 'Довлеет дневи злоба его' (Matt. 6:34, 'sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof'), which Emerson was echoing. The rest is a close translation of two passages some pages apart in the same essay ('the spiritual world takes place' and 'But see how the sentiment is wise' are left out between them).

Translation note. Tolstoy opens with Matthew 6:34 in Church Slavonic («Довлеет дневи злоба его»); the KJV wording, which matches it, is used.

    2. The house in which a man lives may be ruined and destroyed; but the dwelling that the spirit builds for itself out of pure thoughts and good deeds fears not even eternity, and nothing can harm the one who lives in it.

Close, lightly changed: the full aphorism reads 'The house that the physical body lives in can be torn down and destroyed, but if the spirit builds itself a habitation of loving thoughts and kind acts, it will endure to all eternity, and nothing can harm the spirit dwelling therein. — L. A. M.' Tolstoy has 'the house in which a man lives', 'pure thoughts and good deeds' for 'loving thoughts and kind acts', and 'does not fear even eternity' for 'will endure to all eternity'.

    3. One cannot believe in a future life, but one can not only believe but know that the life of the present cannot be destroyed.

    4. Faith in immortality is given not by reasoning but by life.

    5. What convinces us that there must be a future life is not arguments, but walking through life hand in hand with someone, and suddenly that person vanishes there, into nowhere, and you yourself stop before that abyss and look down into it.

    6. The degree of fear we feel before death is a measure of how truly we understand life.

The less fear of death, the more freedom, calm, consciousness of the power of the spirit, and joy of life. With complete release from this fear, with full consciousness that this life is one with infinite truth, there must be complete calm that nothing can disturb.

The consciousness of immortality is natural to the human soul. Only the evil we do, and only to the degree that we do it, deprives us of the consciousness of our immortality.
