“My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work,” said Christ. Each of us has this work of his. We cannot know what the whole of the work is that God does through us, but we cannot help knowing what our part in it must be.

Translation note. John 4:34; the KJV has “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”

    1. Not everyone who says to me: Lord! Lord! — will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my heavenly Father.

    2. If you lack the strength to burn and shed light, then at least do not block it.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Analects (Lunyu), VI.18 (Legge VI.xviii; Pauthier VI.18).

Translated from Pauthier: 'les principes de la droite raison' becomes 'the rules of sound reason' (the Chinese has only 'it'), and Pauthier's third term, 'celui qui en fait ses délices et les pratique', keeps only 'practises'. The Chinese third term is delight (樂), which Pauthier expanded and Tolstoy then dropped, so the climax moves from delighting in the truth to doing it. The Circle repeats the 1903 wording, where Tolstoy signed it 'Chinese wisdom (Lun Yu)'.

    4. The chief question of our life lies only in this: whether, in this short span of life given us, we are doing what the one who sent us into life wants of us.

Is that what we are doing?

    5. I am weighed down; I ask God to help me. But after all, it is my business to serve God, not his to serve me. I need only remember this, and the weight will lighten.

Translation note. The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the commas and at the first period; the English sets the entry as one.

    6. There is no abyss between earth and heaven, and it would be blasphemy to think that the abode God has given us must forever remain in the power of evil, self-seeking, and oppression. The earth is not a place of expiation, but our home, in which we must labor to attain truth and justice, the striving for which lies hidden in the soul of every man.

There is no antagonism between Earth and Heaven, and it is blasphemous to imagine that God's work, the Home he has given us, may be by us despised, and abandoned to the influence of Evil, Egotism, or Tyranny, without sin.
The Earth is no sojourn of Expiation. It is the home wherein we are to strive towards the realisation of that ideal of the True and Just, of which each man has in his own soul the germ.

Two consecutive sentences, close in sense. Mazzini's 'no opposition between earth and heaven' becomes 'no abyss'; 'it is blasphemy to suppose that God's home may without sin be despised and abandoned to the Powers, to Evil, Egotism, and Tyranny' becomes 'blasphemy to think that the dwelling God gave us must for ever remain in the power of evil, self-interest, and oppression'. «Наше жилище, в котором мы должны трудиться» follows Venturi's 'the home wherein we are to strive' more than the Italian «soggiorno di lavoro», so the Russian (through Nikiforov's 1905 «Избранные мысли», not found online) was probably made from the English, as with the December Mazzini entries.

IV of the George Allen edition, 1906, Letter LXXVI, early in the letter, where Ruskin tells how in 1858 he 'discovered a fallacy which had underlain all my art teaching'.

Close. Ruskin's 'human work' becomes 'the work appointed to us'; 'honourably and thoroughly' becomes 'honestly and faultlessly'; the reason Ruskin gives ('because we are now Men') is left out, and 'being practically no matter' becomes 'it is all the same whether'. Ruskin's words are printed here without the omitted clause. Probably through Nikiforov's Russian selection, vol. III (Posrednik, 1904), which the Jubilee list of sources names.

Imagine that the aim of life is your happiness — and life is a cruel absurdity. Acknowledge what human wisdom and your reason and your heart tell you: that life is service to the one who sent you into the world, and life becomes a constant joy.
