It is better to do nothing than to do what is harmful.

    1. People often proudly refuse innocent amusements, saying that they have no time because they have work to do. And yet, to say nothing of the fact that good-natured, merry play is more needed and more important than a great deal of work, the work busy people boast of is often such that it would be better never to do it at all.

    2. When we are engaged in an occupation — not a bad one (we should never on any account take up a bad one), but one that is indifferent or even good — and when we give ourselves up to good pleasures, we must remember that there are demands of the soul (conscience) more important than any pleasures or occupations; and all such occupations must be dropped at once, as soon as conscience calls on us to fulfill its demand. And yet occupations and pleasures have a way of absorbing people so completely that good, moral people answer moral demands: “I have no time, I must try out the oxen I have bought, I must bury my father who has died.”

We must remember the meaning of the words: let the dead bury the dead.

Translation note. The answers echo the excuses of Luke 14:19 (“I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them”) and Luke 9:59 (“suffer me first to go and bury my father”). The last words are Jesus’ reply, Luke 9:60 and Matthew 8:22, where the KJV has “Let the dead bury their dead.”

    3. Cruel people always try to keep busy so as to find in their occupations a justification for their cruelty.

    4. Just as a horse on a treadwheel cannot help walking, so a person cannot help doing something. And so there is as much merit in a person’s working as in a person’s breathing; what matters is what a person does.

    5. It is a very common error to consider pleasures and amusements an unimportant and even a bad thing (Islam, the old Orthodoxy, Puritanism). Pleasure is as important as labor; it is the reward of labor. Labor cannot go on without a break. Necessary rest is naturally adorned with pleasures.

Pleasures are bad only when, first, they need the labor of other people (to make ready for tennis, the theater, horse races, and the like). Second, when pleasures turn into a sharp struggle of rivalry, as often happens in games of skill; and third, when pleasures are arranged for a few only. Where none of this is so, pleasure, especially for the young, is not only not a bad thing but a good one.

    6. There is no occupation emptier and more useless, and more harmful to the soul, than concern for increasing one’s property; and there is no occupation that draws one in as this one does, or to which such importance is ascribed.

Work and pleasure, alternating rightly, make life joyful. But not every kind of work, and not every pleasure.
