The life of society can be improved only by self-renunciation.

    1. They say: one swallow does not make a spring. But because one swallow does not make a spring, is the swallow that already feels the spring really not to fly, but to wait? If every bud and every blade of grass waited like that, there would never be a spring. So we too, in establishing the kingdom of God, need not think whether I am the first swallow or the thousandth.

Translation note. The English proverb has summer (“One swallow does not make a summer”); the Russian has spring, and the thought turns on it.

    2. Heaven and earth are eternal. They are eternal because they do not exist for themselves. That is why they are eternal.

In the same way the holy man frees himself from self, and by this he becomes eternal. And in becoming eternal, he becomes mighty as well, and accomplishes all that he needs to.

    Lao-Tzu.

    What changed

The sage whose person “is preserved” becomes a holy man who “becomes eternal,” and then “mighty as well.”

    What Tolstoy read · Paul Carus, Lao-Tze's Tao-Teh-King, Chinese-English
Heaven endures and earth is lasting. And why can heaven and earth endure and be lasting? Because they do not live for themselves. On that account can they endure.
He surrenders his person and his person is preserved. Is it not because he seeks not his own? For that reason he can accomplish his own.

In English · James Legge, 1891
    7. 1. Heaven is long-enduring and earth continues long. The reason why heaven and earth are able to endure and continue thus long is because they do not live of, or for, themselves.
… he treats his person as if it were foreign to him, and yet that person is preserved. Is it not because he has no personal and private ends, that therefore such ends are realised?

Tolstoy’s own version · «

The first paragraph follows Carus ('Heaven endures and earth is lasting ... because they do not live for themselves. On that account can they endure'). In the second, Carus's 'he surrenders his person and his person is preserved ... he seeks not his own; for that reason he can accomplish his own' was kept in 1903 ('renounces himself and so is saved'); the Circle rewrites it as 'renounces himself and so becomes eternal, and becoming eternal he becomes mighty and accomplishes all he needs', drawing the sage into the eternity of heaven and earth. 'Puts his person behind and his person comes to the front' is dropped in both.

    3. In private life and in the common life there is one law: if you want to improve life, be ready to give it up.

    4. In times when the nations wait only for a sign to begin the greatest battle between good and evil that has ever been on earth — when in every part of the world the dull rolling of thunder is already heard, when people feel that the time is near when two armies will clash, the army of God and the army of Satan, and that the future fate of humanity, its liberation or its enslavement, depends on this clash — in these solemn times we must remember above all that the title of soldier in God’s army can be earned only by following the example of its leader, who made himself like the poor in order to save people: to renounce everything, to have no place to lay one’s head, so as not to grow soft, so as to be wholly free to be here today and there tomorrow, to be wherever there is danger, wherever the struggle is going on, and to leave the dead to bury the dead. And the dead are those who, sunk in cares about what passes and in bustle over material things, do not even know that there is in them a soul that demands liberation, that to live means to struggle, means to die, that only in this way can the great liberation be accomplished.

The second half of the reflection, closely translated; Tolstoy leaves out the first half (the power of charity to heal the ills of humanity and of faith, 'for the world belongs to those who believe'). 'Rumours of war rumble' becomes 'dull peals of thunder'; 'like his chief, renounce everything; like the Son of man, an image in this of the poor he came to save' becomes 'following the example of its leader, who made himself like the poor to save men: renounce everything'. This thought is in the 1908 text (Jubilee vol. 41). The thoughts Jubilee vol. 42 prints as left out of the 1906 first edition for the censor under January 19 are a different set (on knowing what one must not do), and it is not among them. No public-domain English of Les Évangiles was found.

Translation note. Christ’s words in Matthew 8:20 and 8:22 (KJV: “the Son of man hath not where to lay his head”; “let the dead bury their dead”).

    5. Our perfection is measured by the degree of our liberation from the personality. The more we free ourselves from our personality, the more perfect we are.

Translation note. «Личность», the personality: the separate, individual self.

All attempts to improve life without sacrifice are in vain. Such attempts only put off the possibility of improvement.
