The enlightened are those who know their calling in life.
1. The learned are those who know a great deal from books; the educated, those who have made their own all the knowledge and skills most widespread in their time; the enlightened, those who understand the meaning of their own life.
2. Ever since humankind has existed, there have always arisen among all peoples teachers who composed the science of what a human being most needs to know. This science always taught what the calling, and therefore the true good, of each person and of all people is. Only by this science can the value of all other knowledge be judged.
The subjects of the sciences are countless; and without knowing what the calling and the good of all people consist in, there is no way of choosing among this endless number of subjects, and so without this knowledge all other knowledge and all the arts become, as they have indeed become in our time in the Christian world, an idle and harmful amusement.
3. The only explanation of the insane life that the people of our time lead, a life contrary to the consciousness of the best people of all times, lies in the fact that the young generations are taught many of the most difficult subjects: the position of the heavenly bodies, the state of the earth millions of years ago, the origin of organisms, and so on. The one thing they are not taught is what everyone always needs: what the meaning of human life is, how it should be lived, and what the wisest people of antiquity thought about this question and how they resolved it. Not only are the young generations of our world not taught this, but in its place they are taught, under the name of the Law of God, the most obvious absurdities, which those who teach them do not believe themselves. Under the whole building of our life, in place of stone, bubbles blown full of air have been laid. How can this building not fall?
Translation note. «Закон Божий», “the Law of God”, was the name of religious instruction as a subject in Russian schools; Tolstoy writes «закон бога», the law of God.
4. It is the most ordinary thing in our time to see people who consider themselves learned, educated, and enlightened, and who know a countless number of needless things, remaining mired in the deepest ignorance, not only not knowing the meaning of their own life but taking pride in not knowing it. And conversely, it is no less ordinary to meet, among the barely literate and the illiterate, who know nothing of the chemical table, of parallaxes, or of the properties of radium, people who are truly enlightened, who know the meaning of their life and take no pride in it, but only pity those supposedly enlightened people who by their boundless self-assurance make their ignorance indestructible.
Translation note. The chemical table is the periodic table of the elements.
The one thing needful in science is the knowledge of how we ought to live. And this knowledge is open to all.
Translation note. «Единое на потребу», “the one thing needful”, is Christ’s phrase to Martha in Luke 10:42 (KJV: “But one thing is needful”). The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the dash and the comma; the English sets the line as one.
