What a necessary seasoning to everything kindness is! The very best qualities are worth nothing without kindness, and the very worst vices are easily forgiven with it.
1. There is a natural kindness, which depends on outward and bodily causes — on heredity, on good digestion, on success. This kindness is very pleasant both for the one who feels it and for other people. And there is a kindness that comes from spiritual, inner work. Such kindness is less attractive, but then the first may not only disappear but turn into malice, while the second not only never disappears but constantly increases.
2. If, while doing a task you consider good, you feel hostility, or make others feel hostility toward you, stop at once: it means that you do not yet know how to do the task you have taken on. If, while doing a task, you are in physical pain, you stop and learn to do the task so that it does not hurt you. It is the same with any task if it calls up unkind feelings. This is a sure sign that you do not yet know how to do the task you have taken on: you must learn.
3. We must value even the mere appearance of good in other people, because out of this play of pretense, by which they win themselves respect — possibly undeserved — something serious may, perhaps, arise in the end.
Only the appearance of good in ourselves must we mercilessly wipe away — tear off the veil with which self-regard covers our failings.

Kant's two sentences, closely: even the semblance of good in others must be of value to us, because from this play of pretenses, which win respect perhaps without deserving it, something earnest may in the end arise; only the semblance of good in ourselves must be wiped away without sparing, and the veil torn off with which self-love covers our moral failings. Tolstoy writes «недостатки» (shortcomings) for “moralischen Gebrechen” (moral infirmities), adds «пожалуй» (perhaps) in «может возникнуть, пожалуй, нечто серьезное» (something serious may perhaps arise) for “endlich wohl Ernst werden kann” (may in the end well turn to earnest), and sets the second sentence as a paragraph of its own. Richter's excerpt ends where Tolstoy's does; Kant's sentence goes on, “weil der Schein da betrügt …” (because the semblance deceives where one persuades oneself, by what has no moral content, that one's guilt is paid off, as when repentance at the end of life is taken for real amendment), which neither prints (Kirchmann's edition, p. 40). 4.
4. The good we have done gladdens us but does not satisfy us. It always seems that we ought to have done more.
5. However much good you do, there will always remain still more to wish for.

The Circle keeps the second sentence of Tolstoy's 1903 entry (Thoughts of Wise Men, 15 October), «Сколько ни сделаешь добра, всегда останется пожелать еще большего» (however much good you do, there will always remain more to wish for), and drops the first, «Как ни старайся, но очень трудно постоянно творить только доброе» (try as you may, it is very hard always to do only good). In that book, the Jubilee vol. 40 commentary says, «Конфуций» marks D. Konissi's Russian Great Learning and Zhongyong, so the entry is probably Konissi's, from one of the two; it was not placed. Nearest in thought is the Zhongyong, ch. 12 ('great as heaven and earth are, men still find some things in them with which to be dissatisfied', 天地之大也,人猶有所憾), and ch. 13 (the four duties to none of which Confucius says he has attained, and 'if in his practice he has anything defective, the superior man dares not but exert himself'). Without Konissi's text neither can be confirmed.

6. There is no immediate inclination to actions that are bad in the moral sense, but there is, undoubtedly, such an immediate inclination to good actions.

Kant's note, closely: there is no immediate inclination at all to morally evil actions, but there is an immediate one to good ones. Tolstoy writes «не существует» (there does not exist) for “es gibt gar keine” (there is no … at all) and «но, несомненно, есть такая» (but undoubtedly there is such) for “wohl aber” (but indeed), and repeats «поступкам» (actions) at the end. Richter places the note among Kant's precritical writings on ethics and cites the fragments from his papers printed in Hartenstein's edition, vol. VIII; that volume was not consulted. 7.
7. To find joy in serving people, and living creatures generally, we must first of all train ourselves not to do evil to people and to living creatures, not to build our life on the sufferings and the life of others.
Kindness is the fundamental property of the soul. If people are not kind, it is only because they have fallen prey to some deception, temptation, or passion that has upset this natural property of theirs.
