The family bond is firm and brings good to people only when it is not only a family bond but a religious one as well, when all the members of the family believe in the same God and in his law.

Without this the family is a source not of joy but of suffering.

    1. Family egoism is crueler than personal egoism. People who would be ashamed to sacrifice the goods of another for themselves alone consider it their duty to make use of other people’s misfortune and need for the good of their family.

    2. The most common and most unjust justification of our bad deeds is the good of the family.

Miserliness, bribery, the oppression of workers, dishonest dealings — all this is justified by love for the family.

    3. The ties of family and of country cannot and must not confine the soul. From the day of his birth man is surrounded by a small number of people, so that their tenderness may awaken in him the feeling of love for man. But when family and national attachments become exclusive and so exclude the universal claims of the human race, then, instead of being the educators of the heart, they become its grave.

… and whenever domestic or national attachments become exclusive, engrossing, clannish, so as to shut out the general claims of the human race, the highest end of Providence is frustrated, and home, instead of being the nursery, becomes the grave of the heart.

A manuscript of 1825 on universal love, in Memoir of William Ellery Channing, with Extracts from his Correspondence and Manuscripts, ed. W. H. Channing (1848), vol. III, Vol. III, Part Third, ch. III 'Social Reforms', 'Spirit of Reform', pp. 6–7 (10th edition, Boston: American Unitarian Association, 1874).

Shortened, its order kept. Channing's 'the ties of family and of country were never intended to circumscribe the soul' becomes 'cannot and must not limit the soul'; 'Man is connected at birth with a few beings, that the spirit of humanity may be called forth by their tenderness' becomes 'that the tenderness of these people may call forth in him the feeling of love for man'. In the last sentence Tolstoy leaves out 'engrossing, clannish' and 'the highest end of Providence is frustrated', and makes the attachments themselves, rather than 'home', the nursery that becomes 'the grave of the heart'; 'nursery' is 'educators' (воспитательницами). The middle sentence breaks across the scan's running head ('UNIVERSAL LOVE. 7') and is not quoted. The Memoir dates the extract 1825; it was not found in Channing's Works. No printable, for the cuts.

    4. Love for the family is a feeling of self-love, and therefore it may be the cause, but not the justification, of unjust, unkind deeds.

    5. And they let him know: Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see you. He said to them in answer: My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.

    7. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and his own life as well, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26). “Hate” in this verse does not mean that Christ rejected the family or taught hatred of it; it means only what is said in verse 24 of the eighth chapter of Luke: that to Christ, and to his disciples and imitators, people are near and dear not through family ties but through their bond with God, and therefore with one another.

These verses commonly scandalize those who have in mind the state of a dissolute person and the morally higher state of a person with a family, but who do not have in mind the state of a religious person, for whom the family state is not the highest state but, on the contrary, is for the most part an obstacle to reaching that highest state.

Translation note. Verse 24 is as printed; the words Tolstoy refers to are Luke 8:21, the fifth thought of this day. Verse 24 tells of the storm on the lake.

    8. Some people seek the good in power, others in curiosity, in the sciences, still others in pleasures. These three kinds of craving formed three different schools, and all the philosophers followed one or another of the three. But those who came nearer than the others to the true philosophy understood that the universal good, the object toward which all people strive, should not lie in any of the particular things that only some can possess, and that, once divided, grieve their possessor more by the lack of the part he does not have than they delight him with the part that belongs to him. They understood that the true good must be such that all could possess it at once, without its being diminished and without envy, and that no one could lose it against his will.

Three sentences of B. 425, from the end of its long paragraph on the search for the true good, with B. 461 set between the first and the second. Small changes inside: the philosophers 'qui en ont en effet plus approché' (who came nearer to it, the true good) are those who came «к истинной философии» (to true philosophy); the goods that 'ne peuvent être possédées que par un seul' (can be possessed by one alone) become goods «которыми могут владеть только некоторые» (which only some can possess); 'trois sectes' are «три различных школы». B. 425 ends unfinished ('ils en concluent…') and the Russian stops before it. The Jubilee list of the Circle's sources names the Russian Pascal of P. D. Pervov (1899) and S. Dolgov (1902), not seen.

In love for the family there is, in the moral sense, nothing either good or bad, as there is nothing either good or bad in love for one’s own personality: both are natural phenomena. Love for the family, like love for one’s own personality, when it oversteps its proper bounds, may be a vice, but it can never be a virtue.
