Perfecting ourselves is both inner work and outer. We cannot perfect ourselves without contact with other people, without their influence on us and ours on them.
1. Three temptations torment people: the lusts of the body, pride, and love of wealth. From this come people’s calamities. Without lusts, pride, and covetousness, all people would live happily. How, then, are we to be rid of these terrible diseases? It is hard to be rid of them, chiefly because their germ lies in our very nature.
To rid ourselves of them there is only one means: the work of each one on himself. People often think that laws and governments can help, but this cannot be, because those who write the laws and govern people are people just like the rest, suffering from the same temptations of lust, pride, and covetousness. And so there is no relying on laws and rulers. And so the one thing people can do for their good is to destroy in themselves lust, and pride, and covetousness. No improvement is possible until each one begins this improvement with himself.

Lamennais’s reflection after the temptation in the wilderness, shortened and simplified. Tolstoy keeps the three temptations, the cure ("le travail de chacun sur soi"), and the argument that laws serve those who make them; he drops the image of the grape in the press and ends on improvement beginning with oneself. No public-domain English of this reflection was found.
2. To learn patience, one must practice as much as in learning music; and yet as soon as the teacher comes, as soon as a chance falls to us to learn a little patience, we run away from the lesson.
From The Ethics of the Dust · reworded by Tolstoy .
What changed“Nearly as much practicing as music” loses “nearly,” and “losing our lessons when the master comes” is spelled out: when a chance to learn patience comes, “we run away from the lesson.”
John Ruskin’s own wordsAnd to practice patience. I can tell you, children, THAT requires nearly as much practicing as music; and we are continually losing our lessons when the master comes.

Changed in the last clause. Ruskin's 'nearly as much practicing as music' loses 'nearly'; 'we are continually losing our lessons when the master comes' becomes 'as soon as the teacher comes, as soon as a chance falls to learn patience, we run away from the lesson' (как только учитель приходит, как только выпадает случай поучиться терпению, убегаем от урока): Tolstoy spells out the image. The 1903 version kept closer ('почти', 'почти всегда манкируем, когда учитель приходит'). No printable.
3. “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect,” it is said in the Gospel. This does not mean that Christ bids us be just as God is, but that each of us must try to draw near to divine perfection.
Translation note. Matthew 5:48. The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the commas and the closing quotation mark; the English sets the passage as one.
4. Perfection without any admixture is God; drawing near to God is the life of man. He who constantly strives to perfect himself is reasonable and can tell good from evil. And when a man knows that good is good and evil is evil, he cleaves to good and departs from evil.
From Zhongyong · reworded by Tolstoy .
What changed“The law of heaven” becomes “God,” and the perfecting that is “the law of man” becomes “drawing near to God”; “departs from evil” is added.

From Pauthier. Thoughts of Wise Men (1903) kept 'закон Неба' and 'закон человека' and signed it 'Китайская мудрость («Чунг-Юнг»)'. Here Tolstoy writes 'это бог' for Pauthier's 'est la loi du ciel' and 'приближение к богу — это жизнь человека' for 'la perfection ... est la loi de l'homme', and adds 'удаляется от зла' to 'choisit le bien et s'y attache'. The Zhongyong is ascribed to Confucius's grandson Zisi; these words are given there as Confucius's.
5. However little educated I may be, I can walk in the way of reason. The one thing I must fear is conceit. The highest reason is very simple, but people do not understand it, because they think they understand what they do not understand.

What Tolstoy read · Paul Carus, Lao-Tze's Tao-Teh-KingIf I have ever so little knowledge, I shall walk in the great Reason. It is but assertion that I must fear.
My words are very easy to understand and very easy to practise, but in the world no one can understand, no one can practise them.

The first two sentences follow Carus's ch. 53 ('ever so little knowledge', 'the great Reason', 'assertion' as 'самомнение'). The third replaces ch. 53's 'people are fond of by-paths', which Thoughts of Wise Men (1903) kept, with a free summary of ch. 70 ('no one can understand') and ch. 71 (thinking one knows what one does not). 'Высший разум очень прост' is Carus's 'The great Reason is very plain'.
6. Strange! A man is indignant at the evil that comes from outside, from others — at what he cannot remove — and does not struggle with his own evil, though that is always in his power.

Close in sense, with the two clauses reversed. Marcus's "ridiculous" becomes "Strange!", and "to flee" becomes "is indignant at" and "struggle with". Lightly edited from Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), which reads "своим личным собственным злом, что в его власти".
7. If the time and the energies now spent on attacks on the rich, and on attempts to devise means of changing the existing order of life and establishing a just division of wealth, were spent on the work of self-perfection, there would quickly come that change for the better in our political, social, and moral life which we so desire. Were humanity to learn to think rightly, our world would become as happy as it is now unhappy. But the people do not want to know the truth that makes free, because it runs counter to the political and religious errors to which they have grown accustomed.
