Often all the activity of people’s minds is directed not toward discovering the truth, but toward hiding it. Such activity of the mind is the chief cause of temptations.
1. The only aim of the courts is to keep society in its present state, and to that end they persecute and execute both those who stand above the common level and want to raise it and those who stand below it.
2. In every practical moral precept there is the possibility of a contradiction between this precept and other precepts that flow from the same foundation.
Self-restraint: what, then, not eat, and become unable to serve people? Do not kill animals: what, then, let them eat you? Do not drink wine: what, then, not take communion, not take wine as medicine? Be chaste: what, then, wish for the end of the human race? Do not resist evil by violence: what, then, let someone kill you and others?
Searching out these contradictions shows only that those who busy themselves with it do not want to follow the moral rule.
It is always one and the same story: because of one person who needs wine as medicine — do not resist drunkenness. Because of the fear that the human race will come to an end — do not refrain from debauchery. Because of one imagined attacker — kill, execute, imprison.
3. A man cannot do everything, but the fact that he cannot do everything does not prove that he should do wrong.
From Civil Disobedience · reworded by Tolstoy .
What changed“A man has not everything to do, but something” becomes “A man cannot do everything”: the duty of doing something drops out, and with it Thoreau’s point.
What Tolstoy read · Every Day with Thoreau, in The Coming DayA man has not everything to do, but something; and because he cannot do everything, it is not necessary that he should do something wrong.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Civil Disobedience (first printed as Resistance to Civil Government, 1849), in A Yankee in Canada, with Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers (Boston, 1866), After 'I came into this world, not chiefly to make this a good place to live in, but to live in it, be it good or bad'.
Thoreau's first clause is changed, and with it his point. 'A man has not everything to do, but something' (the duty of doing something) becomes 'A man cannot do everything' (Человек не может сделать всего); 'but something' is left out. 'because he cannot do everything, it is not necessary that he should do something wrong' becomes 'but that he cannot do everything does not prove that he must do wrong' (не доказывает того, чтобы он должен был делать дурное). The Coming Day's calendar prints the sentence unchanged under December 17, credited to Civil Disobedience; it is probably Tolstoy's route, as for May's other Thoreau. No printable.
4. Ever since there have been people, rational beings, they have distinguished good from evil and made use of what people before them had done in making this distinction — they have struggled with evil, sought the true, the best path, and slowly but unswervingly advanced along this path. And always various deceptions have risen up before people, barring this path, meant to show them that there is no need to do this, and that they should live as they happen to live.
5. I love peasants: they are not learned enough to reason perversely.

Word for word; 'les paysans' are «мужики», Russia's peasants. The Circle's printed editions signed it «Монтэнь» (Montaigne); the Jubilee editors corrected the signature to «Монтескье», and the thought stands a few lines before that of 4-28.4 in Montesquieu's Pensées diverses. The Circle's Russian is the same, word for word, as no. 11 of the Montesquieu Tolstoy added to Rusanov's book in 1907. No public-domain English was saved.
6. You sometimes wonder why people defend the strangest, most unreasonable positions: religious, political, scientific. Search — and you will find that they are defending their own position.
Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the commas and the dash; it is set here as one span. «Положение» is both a tenet and a person’s place in the world; the English “position” carries both senses.
As soon as an act is explained by complicated reasoning, be sure that the act is a bad one. The decisions of conscience are direct and simple.
