Спасение от дурного устройства мира только в одном — в распространении среди людей истинной веры.
Salvation from the bad order of the world lies in one thing only — in the spread of true faith among people.
1. Никогда не было ни одного серьезного шага в деле усовершенствования человеческого общества без того, чтобы главная причина этого усовершенствования не была бы вера. И потому всякое учение, не основанное на вере, всегда было и будет бессильно улучшить общественный строй. Ему, может быть, удастся создать прекрасные формы, но этим формам будет вечно недоставать той искры, которую Прометей похитил с неба.
1. There has never been a single serious step in the work of perfecting human society of which faith was not the chief cause. And so every teaching not founded on faith always has been, and always will be, powerless to improve the social order. It may perhaps succeed in creating fine forms, but those forms will forever lack the spark that Prometheus stole from heaven.
From Thoughts upon Democracy in Europe · shortened by Tolstoy .
Mazzini’s own wordsI do not know, historically speaking, a single great conquest of the human spirit ; or a single important step towards the perfectioning of human society, which has not had its root in a strong religious belief …
… is and ever must be powerless to realize the conception of a new world.
… organizing magnificent forms ; but the spark of life, which Prometheus snatched from heaven for his statue, will ever be wanting in them.

Printed in English in 1847; no Italian text was saved. Tolstoy keeps the argument and the image and shortens the rest. He drops 'a single great conquest of the human spirit'; the long clause on 'this supreme necessity of a faith; this eternal problem of the origin and destiny of humanity' becomes «всякое учение, не основанное на вере»; 'powerless to realize the conception of a new world' becomes «бессильно улучшить общественный строй»; 'the spark of life, which Prometheus snatched from heaven for his statue' becomes «той искры, которую Прометей похитил с неба». Mazzini is writing against Fourierism. The Jubilee list names L. P. Nikiforov's Russian selection, «Избранные мысли» of Mazzini (Посредник, 1905), which was not seen. Tolstoy shortened the English, so it is not printable.
2. «Ищите прежде всего царства божия и правды его, и всё остальное приложится вам». Первый шаг к естественному и здоровому устройству общества всегда в обеспечении за всеми людьми их естественных, равных и неотчуждаемых прав на материальный мир. Достигнуть этого не значит сделать всё необходимое, но значит сделать всё остальное более легким. И пока это не будет достигнуто, ничто другое не принесет никакой пользы.
2. “Seek first of all the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all the rest will be added to you.” The first step toward a natural and healthy order of society always lies in securing to all people their natural, equal, and inalienable rights to the material world. To achieve this does not mean doing everything necessary, but it does mean making all the rest easier. And until this is achieved, nothing else will be of any use.

Henry George’s own words"Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness [right or just doing] and all these things shall be added unto you."
The first step toward a natural and healthy organization of society is to secure to all men their natural, equal and inalienable rights in the material universe.
To do this is not to do everything that may be necessary; but it is to make all else easier. And unless we do this nothing else will avail.

A close translation, sentence by sentence. Tolstoy leaves out George's gloss '[right or just doing]', gives 'all these things' as 'all the rest' (всё остальное; the Synodal Matthew 6:33 has «это всё»), and adds 'always' (Первый шаг … всегда в обеспечении). The Jubilee list names S. D. Nikolaev's Russian, «Общественные задачи» (Posrednik, 1906). The saved text is the New York printing of 1886.
Translation note. Matthew 6:33; the KJV has “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” The Russian «всё остальное», “all the rest”, returns two sentences on.
3. Общество не может существовать без общей веры и общей цели; общественная деятельность должна заключаться в приложении к жизни начал, установленных религией.
3. Society cannot exist without a common faith and a common aim; social activity must consist in applying to life the principles established by religion.

The two ideas stand close together elsewhere in Mazzini: in Doveri dell'uomo, chapter II (London, 1860, p. 23), 'Vogliamo educazione comune: come darla o riceverla, senza una fede comune? Vogliamo formare Nazione: come riescirvi, se non credendo in uno scopo comune, in un dovere comune?', and, in Thoughts upon Democracy in Europe (Life and Writings, vol. VI, p. 201), 'great social transformations never have been, and never will be, other than the application of a religious principle ; of a moral development ; of a strong and active common faith.' Neither has Tolstoy's wording. Tolstoy probably took it from L. P. Nikiforov's selection of Mazzini's thoughts (Посредник, 1905), named in the Jubilee list and not seen.

4. The apostles lived so that all were of one heart and one soul. And had they been at odds among themselves, no one would have known of the faith of Christ. Even now the heathen do not accept Christianity because they do not see unity and love among Christians. Nothing draws people as virtue does, and nothing repels them as vice does. That is why people turn away from Christianity, because when a man sees that one who has been commanded to love even his enemies practices extortion, robs, wages war, stirs up enmity, and treats people like wild beasts, he cannot believe the teaching of love. And when he sees that a Christian fears death, he will by no means believe in immortality. We Christians are to blame that they do not believe in Christ’s teaching. Perhaps we shall say: “Take your example from the holy men of old.” But people want to see virtuous people of today. Show us, they say, your faith by your works; but there are no works. On the contrary, they see that we torment our neighbor worse than beasts do. That is what keeps people from the Christian teaching. We say that we profess it, but we only frighten people away from it.
From Homilies on the Gospel of John · reworded by Tolstoy .
What changedAdds “wages war” to what the man “commanded to love even his enemies” does, and a closing sentence of Tolstoy’s own, “We say that we profess it, but we only frighten people away from it”; “his very kindred” become “people.”
What Tolstoy read · Беседы на Евангелие от Иоанна, Russian translation in «Творения святого отца нашего Иоан…

For nothing so raises respect in the heathen as virtue, nothing so offends them as vice.
When one of them sees the greedy man, the plunderer, exhorting others to do the contrary, when he sees the man who was commanded to love even his enemies, treating his very kindred like brutes, he will say that the words are folly.
We, we are the cause of their remaining in their error.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Homilies on the Gospel of John, Homily LXXII (on John 13:20–35), § 5 (§ 4 in the Russian).
A free shortening of the Russian translation of Homily LXXII, with additions. Kept nearly word for word: «у всех было одно сердце и одна душа. А если бы они были несогласны между собою», and «Покажи нам, говорят, веру от дел твоих, а дел нет. Напротив, они видят, что мы хуже зверей терзаем ближнего своего». Changed: "there is nothing else that causes the heathen to stumble, except that there is no love" («не другое что соблазняет язычников, а именно то, что нет любви») becomes «язычники не принимают христианства потому, что не видят в христианах единения и любви»; to the list of what the man commanded to love his enemies does («лихоимствует, грабит, побуждает к вражде») Tolstoy adds «воюет» (makes war), and "his very kindred" («с одноплеменниками») becomes «с людьми» (people); "how will he receive the accounts of immortality?" becomes «то уже никак не поверит в бессмертие»; "We, we are the cause of their remaining in their error" becomes «Мы, христиане, виноваты в том, что они не верят в Христово учение». The last sentence, «Мы говорим, что исповедуем его, а только отпугиваем от него людей», is Tolstoy's. «Ничто не привлекает так людей, как добродетель, и ничто так не отталкивает, как порок» has both halves of the Greek, as the English shows ("nothing so raises respect in the heathen as virtue, nothing so offends them as vice"); the Russian translation has only the second («ничто столько не соблазняет, как порок»). The Jubilee list of sources names «Наставления св. Иоанна Златоуста» (Посредник, 1888), not seen. The Greek (PG 59) was not saved.
Translation note. “Of one heart and one soul”: Acts 4:32. “Show us your faith by your works” recalls James 2:18 (KJV: “shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works”).
5. Христианство, если только оно искренно принято, действует, как самый страшный динамит, разрывая всё старое и открывая новые бесконечные горизонты.
5. Christianity, if only it is sincerely accepted, acts like the most terrible dynamite, blasting apart everything old and opening new, endless horizons.
Если ты видишь, что устройство общества дурно и ты хочешь исправить его, то знай, что для этого есть только одно средство: то, чтобы все люди стали лучше; а для того, чтобы люди стали лучше, в твоей власти только одно: самому сделаться лучше.
If you see that the order of society is bad and you want to set it right, then know that there is only one means for this: that all people become better; and for people to become better, only one thing is in your power: to become better yourself.
