Молиться — значит признавать и вспоминать законы вечного и бесконечного существа бога и примерять к ним свои прошедшие и будущие поступки. Полезно делать это как можно чаще.
To pray is to acknowledge and recall the laws of the eternal and infinite being, God, and to measure our past and future actions against them. It is useful to do this as often as possible.
Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the dash that stands for “is”; it is set here as one span.
1. Прежде, чем приступить к молитве, испытай себя, способен ли ты сосредоточиться мыслями, иначе не молись.
Кто делает из молитвы своей привычку, молитва того не искренна.
1. Before you set about prayer, examine yourself, whether you are able to collect your thoughts; otherwise do not pray.
The prayer of one who makes a habit of his prayer is not sincere.

First paragraph: Rabbi Eliezer in Berakhot 30b, 'a man should always assess himself: if he can direct his heart, let him pray; if not, let him not pray'. Second: Rabbi Eliezer in Mishnah Berakhot 4:4, 'he who makes his prayer fixed (keva), his prayer is not supplication'; Tolstoy renders 'fixed' as 'привычку'. Thoughts of Wise Men (1903) had 'благоговейно', dropped here.
2. Зачем лишать себя молитвы, этого средства против нашей слабости? Все душевные стремления, которые приближают нас к богу, освобождают нас от мысли о себе. Прося помощи у бога, мы научаемся находить эту помощь в себе. Не он изменяет нас, а мы изменяем себя, приближаясь к нему. Всё, чего мы просим у него, как должного, мы сами даем себе.
2. Why deprive ourselves of prayer, this remedy against our weakness? All the strivings of the soul that bring us nearer to God free us from the thought of ourselves. In asking God for help, we learn to find that help in ourselves. It is not he who changes us, but we who change ourselves as we draw near to him. All that we ask of him as our due, we ourselves give to ourselves.

Original · FrenchA Dieu ne plaise que je m’ôte cette ressource contre mes faiblesses !
Tous les actes de l’entendement qui nous élèvent à Dieu nous portent au-dessus de nous-mêmes ; en implorant son secours, nous apprenons à le trouver.
Ce n’est pas lui qui nous change ; c’est nous qui changeons en nous élevant à lui. Tout ce qu’on lui demande comme il faut, on se le donne ; …

Close. Rousseau’s "A Dieu ne plaise que je m’ôte cette ressource" becomes a question («Зачем лишать себя молитвы»); "les actes de l’entendement" becomes «душевные стремления», and "nous portent au-dessus de nous-mêmes" «освобождают нас от мысли о себе». "Comme il faut" is rendered «как должного». The speaker is Saint-Preux.
3. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stop and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, so as to show themselves before men. Truly I tell you that they are already receiving their reward.
But you, when you pray, go into your room and, having shut your door, pray to your Father, who is in secret; and your Father, who sees what is secret, will reward you.
And in praying, do not say what is superfluous, as the pagans do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you have need of before you ask him.

The Russian Bible (Synodal translation)И, когда молишься, не будь, как лицемеры, которые любят в синагогах и на углах улиц, останавливаясь, молиться, чтобы показаться перед людьми.
Ты же, когда молишься, войди в комнату твою и, затворив дверь твою, помолись Отцу твоему, Который втайне; и Отец твой, видящий тайное, воздаст тебе явно.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Matthew, 6:5–8.
The Synodal text with one omission: "явно" (openly) at the end of verse 6 is dropped. Small changes: "пред" for "перед", and verse 8 begins a new sentence.
Translation note. Tolstoy’s wording. The KJV has “They have their reward” in verse 5; “shall reward thee openly” in verse 6, where Tolstoy has no “openly”; and “use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do … for their much speaking” in verse 7.
4. С древних времен признано, что для человека необходима молитва.
Для людей прежнего времени молитва была — и теперь остается для большинства людей — обращением, при известных условиях, в известных местах, при известных действиях и словах — к богу или богам для умилостивления их.
Христианское учение не знает таких молитв, но учит тому, что молитва необходима не как средство избавления от мирских бедствий и приобретения мирских благ, а как средство укрепления человека в борьбе с грехами.
4. It has been recognized since ancient times that prayer is necessary for human beings.
For people of earlier times prayer was — and for most people it still remains — an appeal, under certain conditions, in certain places, with certain actions and words, to God or the gods, to propitiate them.
The Christian teaching knows no such prayers, but teaches that prayer is necessary not as a means of deliverance from worldly calamities and of gaining worldly goods, but as a means of strengthening people in the struggle against their sins.
5. Prayer consists in this: having freed myself from everything worldly, from everything that can distract my senses (the Muslims do very well when, on entering a mosque or beginning to pray, they close their eyes and ears with their fingers), to call forth in myself the divine principle. The best way to do this is what Christ teaches: to go alone into the inner room and shut oneself in, that is, to pray in complete solitude, whether it be in an inner room, in the forest, or in the field. Prayer is this: having freed oneself from everything worldly and outward, to call forth in oneself the divine part of one’s soul, to pass into it, through it to enter into communion with him of whom it is a particle, to become conscious of oneself as the servant of God, and to check one’s soul, one’s actions, one’s desires against the demands not of the outward conditions of the world, but of this divine part of the soul.
And such prayer is not the idle sentiment and excitement that public prayers produce with their singing, pictures, lights, and sermons, but such prayer is a help, a strengthening, an elevation of the soul. Such prayer is a confession, a review of past actions and a pointing of the direction for future ones.
Translation note. Christ’s teaching is Matthew 6:6. «Клеть», the word of the Church Slavonic Gospel, is the KJV’s “closet”; in the day’s third thought Tolstoy has «комната», “room”.
Хорошо возобновлять свою молитву, т. е. выражение своего отношения к богу. Человек постоянно растет, изменяется, и потому должно изменяться и уясняться и его отношение к богу. Должна изменяться и молитва.
It is good to renew our prayer, that is, the expression of our relation to God. We are constantly growing and changing, and so our relation to God must also change and become clearer. Prayer must change as well.
