To define the meaning of life is either a very hard and insoluble task — such it is when we ask God why he sent us into this world — or a very simple one, when we ask ourselves what we should do.

    1. Human life, which may be cut off at any second, must, if it is not to be the crudest mockery, have a meaning such that the significance of life does not depend on its length or brevity.

    2. Travelers dirty and wreck the rooms of an inn and then condemn the innkeeper who gave it over entirely to their use. In the same way people condemn God for the evil of the world.

    3. It is as unbecoming for a wise man to reason much about the nature of beings above him as about the nature of beings below him. It is too immodest to suppose that man can comprehend the first, and too degrading to suppose that he may wholly fix his attention on the second. To acknowledge his eternal relative greatness and nothingness, to know both himself and his place in nature, to be content with his subjection to God while unable to comprehend him, and to rule the lower creatures with love and kindness, neither sharing their animal passions nor imitating them — that is what it means to be humble toward God, kind toward his creatures, and wise toward oneself.

    John Ruskin.

    John Ruskin’s own words
It is as little the part of a wise man to reflect much on the nature of beings above him, as of beings beneath him. It is immodest to suppose that he can conceive the one, and degrading to suppose that he should be busied with the other.
To recognize his everlasting inferiority, and his everlasting greatness; to know himself, and his place; to be content to submit to God without understanding Him; and to rule the lower creation with sympathy and kindness, yet neither sharing the passion of the wild beast, nor imitating the science of the Insect;--this you will find is to be modest towards God, gentle to His creatures, and wise for himself.

Close, sentence for sentence. Small changes: 'nor imitating the science of the Insect' becomes 'not imitating them'; 'modest towards God, gentle to His creatures' becomes 'humble... kind'.

    4. To live without understanding the meaning of one’s life there is only one means: to live in a constant bodily stupor, produced by tobacco, alcohol, morphine, or in a constant sensual stupor of amusements and every kind of sport and entertainment.

    5. This world is not a joke, nor only a vale of trial and a passage to a better, eternal world; it is one of the eternal worlds, beautiful and joyful, which we not only can but must make more beautiful and more joyful for those who live with us and for all who will live in it after us.

    6. That the perfecting of our soul is the only aim of our life is true if only because every other aim, in the face of death, is senseless.

Do not think that bewilderment before the meaning of human life, and failure to understand it, is anything lofty or tragic. Our bewilderment before the meaning of life is like the bewilderment of someone who has come into a company busy reading a good book. The bewilderment of such a person, who does not listen to or does not understand what is being read and who bustles about among people who are occupied, is nothing lofty or tragic, but something ridiculous, foolish, and pitiful.
