Prayer is reminding ourselves of our relation to the infinite, to God.

    1. Life confuses us, irritates us, scatters our thoughts. That is why prayer proves so useful to the soul. Prayer is a strengthening medicine; it gives us back peace and courage. It reminds us of our sins, of our duty to forgive everyone; it says to us: “You are loved — love; you have received — give; you must die — do your work; overcome anger with generosity, evil with good. Never mind people’s false judgment of you. You are not bound either to please them or to succeed. Do what you ought; come what may. Your witness is your conscience, and your conscience is God speaking in you. Remember and refresh all this in yourself — in this is prayer.”

    Amiel.

    What changed

“Piety is the daily renewing of the ideal” gives way to the plain reason prayer is useful, “Life confuses us, irritates us, scatters our thoughts”; “pardon and … duty” become “our sins, … our duty to forgive everyone,” and “to follow the common example” becomes “to please them.”

Piety is the daily renewing of the ideal, the steadying of our inner being, agitated, troubled, and embittered by the common accidents of existence. Prayer is the spiritual balm, the precious cordial which restores to us peace and courage. It reminds us of pardon and of duty.
Thou art neither bound to follow the common example nor to succeed.

The second half of the entry, reworked. Tolstoy leaves out its opening on religion's place and turns Amiel's sentence on piety ('the daily refreshment of the ideal, the rebalancing of our inner being, agitated, troubled, embittered by the daily accidents of existence') into «Жизнь путает, раздражает нас, рассеивает наши мысли. 'Le baume spirituel, le cordial précieux' becomes one «крепительное лекарство»; 'Elle nous rappelle le pardon et le devoir' (it reminds us of pardon and of duty) becomes «Она напоминает нам наши грехи, нашу обязанность прощения всех» (our sins, our duty to forgive everyone); 'Qu'importent l'opinion aveugle, ton caractère méconnu, les ingratitudes éprouvées?' becomes «Чтó нужды до ложного суждения людей о тебе»; 'ni à suivre les exemples vulgaires' (to follow common examples) becomes «ни угождать им» (to please them). The words of prayer ('tu es aimé, aime; tu as reçu, donne; tu dois mourir, fais ton œuvre'), 'Fais ce que dois, advienne que pourra', and the witness of conscience are kept close. The closing sentence, «Вспоминай и освежай в себе всё это — в этом молитва», is Tolstoy's, drawn from Amiel's 'rafraîchissement quotidien'.

    2. Know that we pray to God and express our wishes before him not because his will is subject to change, but because, in turning to him, we thereby acknowledge him, and as we acknowledge his power, our soul is purified and uplifted.

Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), 6 October, prints a longer form signed «Талмуд»: in praying we acknowledge that God created the world, cares for, feeds, and rules all, and sees every deed, good and bad, and in contemplating his glory the soul is purified and raised. The Circle shortens this list to «мы тем самым признаем его, а признавая его власть». The passage was not found in the Talmud or the Midrash. Tolstoy's 1903 Talmud sayings came from his two Russian anthologies (Jubilee vol. 40), whose compilers drew on later rabbinic books as well; this one probably came from them.

Searched: Thoughts of Wise Men (1903) and its variants (Jubilee vol. 40); the Jubilee vols. 41-42 (text, name index, attribution corrections); Pirkei Avot in Hebrew and in Gorfinkle's English; Sefaria's full-text search of its Hebrew corpus (Talmud, Midrash, musar) for the key phrases; Conway's Sacred Anthology. Tolstoy's two Russian Talmud anthologies (Gurvich, «Живая мораль», 1901; «Мировоззрение талмудистов», 1874-76) were not found online. Also Sefer ha-Chinukh, commandment 433 (prayer), which is close in thought but not in wording.

    3. Prayer is addressed to a personal God not because God is personal (I even know for certain that he is not personal, because personality is limitation, and God is boundless), but because I am a personal being.

I have a little green glass over my eye, and I see everything green; I cannot help seeing the world green, though I know it is not so.

    4. Prayer is the clarifying of our relation to the origin of all things; it is the clarifying of our bond with people, of our duties to them as to children of the same Father as ourselves, the settling of accounts with ourselves for all our actions, and the examining of our dark past, so as to guard ourselves in the future against the errors of the past.

Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), 1 November, signed «Талмуд», is the fuller form. For the Circle Tolstoy changed 'prayer for every honest man is the clarifying of his relation to his creator, who does him good every minute' to «Молитва — это выяснение своего отношения к началу всего» ('the source of all'), and shortened the rest. The definition resembles S. R. Hirsch's account of hitpallel as judging oneself, one's relations to God and to the world (Horeb, 1837, §618), but the wording does not match and the passage was not found in the Talmud.

Hirsch, Horeb (1837; 1899 printing, archive.org horevversucheb00hirsuoft), §618.

    5. It is good to pray at set times. But if you cannot collect your thoughts, better not to pray; do not repeat words with your tongue alone.

    6. Prayer in solitude is good and needed, but most needed of all is prayer amid the noise of people, when you are agitated, carried away, irritated. To remember your soul and God at such moments — this is the most needed and the best prayer.

Translation note. The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the commas and the dash; the English sets the passage as one.

Do not think that you can please God by prayer rather than by obedience to him. Prayer is only reminding yourself of what you are and what the work of your life is.
