The church’s perversion of Christianity has put the realization of the kingdom of God further from us; but the truth of Christianity is like the fire in a bonfire which, smothered for a time by damp brushwood heaped upon it, has already dried the damp twigs and is beginning to catch hold of them and break out. The true meaning of Christianity can now be seen by all, and its influence is already stronger than the deception that hides it.
1. We must set the religion that Jesus professed free from the religion whose object is Jesus. And when we have come to know the state of consciousness that forms the basic cell and the principles of the eternal Gospel, we shall have to hold fast to it.
As the wretched lamps of a village illumination or the little candles of processions go out before the great miracle of the sun’s light, so the petty, local, accidental and doubtful miracles will go out before the law of the life of the spirit, before the great spectacle of human history guided by God.

Just as the poor illuminations of a village _fête_, or the tapers of a procession, are put out by the great marvel of the sun, so the small local miracles, with their meanness and doubtfulness, will sink into insignificance beside the law of the world of spirits, the incomparable spectacle of human history, led by that all-powerful Dramaturgus whom we call God.

Two sentences from the 27 January 1869 entry, joined; Tolstoy leaves out what lies between (the punctum saliens of pure religion, great geniuses as God's messengers, 'what is passing is the arbitrary, the miraculous'). The 'all-powerful dramatist we call God' becomes simply 'history guided by God'. The same Russian, almost word for word, was printed with «Одумайтесь!» in 1904.
Translation note. A village illumination: rows of little tallow lamps (плошки) set out to light up a village on a holiday.
2. I see a new religion, founded on trust in man; appealing to those untouched depths that live within us; preaching that man can love the good without thought of reward, that the divine principle lives in man.

LXXXIX "We do not need the hope of Heaven or fear of Hell", v. 2, Ethical Religion p. 40 (1889 ed.); Coit ch. LXXXIX, v. 2.
Close, lightly changed, via Coit: Tolstoy has Coit's abridgment, without Salter's clause "that he can rise superior to the motives that ordinarily determine men". "The hitherto unstirred depths of loyalty in him" becomes "those untouched depths that live in us" ("loyalty" is dropped); "believing" becomes "preaching"; and the last clause, "that the heaven of principle can rule in the human breast" (Coit: "reign"), becomes "that the divine principle lives in man", which leans Salter's ethical sense toward the religious.
3. What we need, what the people need, what our age demands in order to find a way out of the mire of egoism, doubt and negation in which it is sunk — is a faith in which our souls could cease to wander in pursuit of personal aims, and could all go together, acknowledging one origin, one law, one goal. Every strong faith that arises on the ruins of old, outlived beliefs changes the existing social order, since every strong faith is inevitably applied to every branch of human activity.
Humanity repeats, in different expressions and in different degrees, the words of the Lord’s Prayer: “Thy kingdom come on earth, as in heaven.”

The second half (every strong faith rising on the ruins of the old transforms the social order, since it applies itself to every branch of human activity; humanity repeats the Lord's Prayer, 'Thy kingdom come on earth as in heaven') is Doveri dell'uomo II, close to the Italian (Tolstoy drops the middle clause, 'the earth has always sought to conform itself to the heaven it believed in'). The first sentence ('what we need, what the people need, what our age demands to climb out of the mire of egotism, doubt and negation, is a faith … one origin, one law, one aim') was not found in the Doveri; 'one origin, one law, one aim' echoes chapter IV («Una è la vostra origine, una la legge, uno il fine»). The Russian is taken from the longer Mazzini mosaic printed with «Одумайтесь!» (1904), whose other sentences also come from Doveri II.
Translation note. The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:10) reads in the KJV: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” Here “on earth, as in heaven” goes with the coming of the kingdom.
4. There are men who love only themselves; these are men of hatred, because to love only oneself is to hate others.
There are men of pride, who cannot bear their equals and always want to command and to rule.
There are men of greed, who demand gold, honors, pleasures, and are never sated.
There are men who are robbers, who watch for a weak man in order to strip him by force or by cunning, and who prowl about the house of the widow and the orphan.
There are men of murder, who are full of thoughts of violence. They say: You are our brothers, and they kill those whom they call their brothers as soon as they suspect them of opposing their designs, and with their blood they write their laws.
There are men of fear, who tremble before the wicked man and kiss his hand, hoping by this to escape his oppression.
All these men destroy peace, security and freedom on earth.
But what could these oppressors of the peoples do if they were left to themselves, without the support of the people?
If, to keep the people in slavery, they had only the help of those to whom slavery is profitable, what would this small number count for against whole peoples?
The wisdom of God has so ordered the world that men can always resist despotism, and despotism would be impossible if men understood the wisdom of God.
But the lords of the world have set against the wisdom of God the wisdom of the prince of this world — the devil; and the devil, the king of the oppressors of the peoples, taught them a hellish cunning so as to make their despotism secure.
He said to them: “This is what must be done. Take in every family the strongest of the young men, give them weapons and teach them to use them, and they will fight against their fathers and brothers, for I will put it into their heads that their glory lies in this. I will make them two idols, which shall be called honor and loyalty, and whose law shall be called unquestioning obedience. And they will worship these idols and blindly submit to this law, because I will pervert their minds, and you will have nothing to fear.”
And the oppressors of the peoples did what the devil told them, and the devil did what he had promised the oppressors of the peoples.
And so men of the people raised their hands against their own, to strike down their brothers and imprison their fathers, and even to forget those who had carried them beneath their hearts. And when they were told: “In the name of all that is holy, think of the injustice and cruelty of what you are ordered to do,” they answered: “We do not think, we obey.”
And when they were told: “Have you no love for your fathers, mothers, brothers?” they answered: “We do not love, we obey.”
And when they were told of God and Christ, they said: “Our gods are loyalty and honor.”
Truly I say to you: there has been no temptation more terrible than this.
But this temptation is coming to an end.
A little while yet, and the devil will vanish together with the oppressors of the peoples.

The six kinds of men from chapter XXXIV, then almost all of XXXV, close in wording. Tolstoy leaves out the opening of XXXIV (evils come from Satan; God writes the names of his sons in a sealed book), the men of fear 'who shut their door when an innocent man is attacked in the square', and the whole second half of XXXIV (the city of Satan and the city of God). In XXXV he drops 'since the seduction of the first woman by the Serpent' and the promise that the soldiers will turn to fight for the oppressed; 'Satan will flee to his caverns with the rulers of nations' becomes 'a little more and the devil will vanish with the oppressors'. The idols Honneur and Fidélité and the law Obéissance passive become «честь и верность» and «беспрекословное послушание»; the soldiers' answer about 'the gods of the country … the gods of its masters' is shortened to «Наши боги — это верность и честь». Grave's anthology (1902) prints the end of XXXV, but Tolstoy's text is longer and came from the book.

Do not think that church Christianity is an incomplete, one-sided, formal Christianity, but Christianity all the same. Do not think so: church Christianity is not only not Christianity but the most wicked enemy of true Christianity. This church Christianity now stands toward true Christianity like a criminal caught in the act. It has only two ways out: either to destroy itself or to commit ever new crimes. And however hopeless its position, it still goes on with its terrible, criminal activity.
