There is a natural simplicity, and there is the simplicity of wisdom. Both call forth love and respect.

    1. Most of life’s problems are solved as algebraic equations are: by reducing them to their simplest form.

    2. The words of truth are always unadorned and simple.

    Marcellinus.

The signature most likely means Ammianus Marcellinus, whose line on simple truth is close in thought, but the ascription is not confirmed.

A likely source, not certain. Res gestae, XIV.10.13.

«Марцеллин» is most likely Ammianus Marcellinus; the Jubilee name index has no entry for it. In Constantius's speech to the soldiers: "for truth, set out plainly, is always quite simple" (an echo of Euripides, Phoenissae 469). Tolstoy's "words of truth" and "without ornament" are not in the Latin. A public-domain English (Yonge, 1862) was not saved.

Translation note. Tolstoy gives the name alone; whom it names is uncertain.

    3. The greatest truths are the simplest.

    4. Simplicity is always appealing. Hence the appeal of children and animals.

    5. Nature knows nothing of that hateful division which people have set up among themselves. She endows people with qualities of soul without preferring the noble and the rich. Natural good feelings, it seems, are even met with more often among simple people.

The opening two sentences of the letter, closely: nature knows nothing of the hateful distinction men have set up among themselves; she deals out the qualities of the heart without preferring the noble and the rich, and natural feelings even seem stronger in common people than in others. Tolstoy's small changes: "qualities of the heart" becomes «душевными свойствами» (qualities of the soul); "natural feelings" becomes «Естественные добрые чувства» (natural good feelings); "stronger" (stärker) becomes «чаще встречаются» (are met more often). He stops before the apostrophe "Kind Nature!" Feuchtersleben's anthology prints the passage too. No public-domain English was found.

    6. When people speak abstrusely, artfully, and floridly, they want either to deceive or to put on airs. Such people should not be believed, should not be imitated.

Good speech is simple, intelligible to all, and reasonable.

    7. Simplicity is the consciousness of one’s human dignity.

"La simplicité est la suite ordinaire de l’élévation des sentimens"; Tolstoy writes «всегда» for "ordinaire" and drops the reason that follows ("parce que la simplicité consiste à se montrer tel que l’on est").

    9. Speech brings people together, and so you must try to speak in such a way that everyone can understand you, and that all you say is the truth.

Avoid all that is artificial, exceptional, all that could draw attention to you. Nothing does so much to bring people together as simplicity.
