Most of the evil that people do is done not out of evil will, but out of a widespread false thought, taken on faith.
1. Material results are only the late manifestation of invisible forces. The cannonball has long since left the gun when the sound of the shot reaches us. The decisive events take place in thought.

Three sentences of the entry for 28 December 1880, translated closely. 'Le signe tardif des activités invisibles' (the late sign of invisible activities) becomes «позднее проявление невидимых сил» (the late manifestation of invisible forces). Mrs. Humphry Ward's English selection leaves the passage out, and no other public-domain English was found. Tolstoy reworked the image, unsigned, in (April 26): as the cannonball has left before we hear the shot, the evil of worldly deeds is seen long after the thoughts that caused it. Mrs. M. L. Tolstaya's Russian selection, «Из дневника Амиеля», was not found online.

Word for word: 'Nos actions ne sont ni si bonnes ni si vicieuses que nos volontés' (our actions are neither so good nor so vicious as our wills); 'nos actions' becomes «Действия» (actions) and 'volontés' «желания» (desires). The Circle repeats Tolstoy's Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), September 4, whose commentary (Jubilee vol. 40) says its Vauvenargues for that day came from the «Иллюстрированный настольный календарь т-ва «Просвещение» на 1902 год», not online. 4.
4. Much worse than a bad deed are the thoughts from which all bad deeds come. A bad deed we can refrain from repeating, and can repent of; but bad thoughts give birth to bad deeds. A bad deed beats a road to bad deeds; but bad thoughts draw us irresistibly along that road.
5. Far off rush the bodiless thoughts; quietly they steal along, deeply hidden; whoever subdues them, whoever bridles them, will be freed from their temptation.

Dhammapada 37 in Gerasimov's Russian (1898), as printed in Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), 4 September; the Circle repeats it word for word. Close to the verse: the mind 'travelling far, moving alone, bodiless, lying in the cave (of the heart)' is «Вдаль несутся бестелесные помыслы, тихо крадутся они, глубоко сокровенные» (far rush the bodiless thoughts, quietly they steal, deeply hidden), and those who restrain it 'will be freed from the bonds of Mara'. Gerasimov has «освободится от уз соблазна» (will be freed from the bonds of temptation), Mara read as the tempter, as Müller glosses him; the 1903 text, followed by the Circle, has «от их соблазна» (from their temptation).
6. Think well, and thoughts will ripen into good deeds.
7. It all comes down to thoughts. Thought is the beginning of everything. And thoughts can be governed. And so the chief work in perfecting ourselves is this: to work on our thoughts.
When misfortunes befall you, look for their cause not so much in your deeds as in the thoughts that moved you to do them. In the same way, when outward events that are taking place grieve you, outrage you, look for their causes not in the preceding deeds of people, but in the preceding thoughts that called forth the deeds.
