It is said that we are not free, because everything we do has its own cause, preceding it in time. But we always act only in the present, and the present is outside time: it is only the point where two times touch, the past and the future; and therefore, in the moment of the present, we are always free.

    1. A sage was asked which time in life is the most important, which person is the most important, and what is the most important thing to do.

And the sage answered: “The most important time is the present alone, because in it alone do we have power over ourselves.

“The most important person is the one you are dealing with at this present minute, because none of us can know whether we will ever deal with any other person.

“And the most important thing to do is to live in love with this person, because it is only in order to live in love with all people that we are sent into life.”

Translation note. «Быть в любви с» means to be in a loving relation with someone, without the romantic sense of the English “to be in love with.”

    2. You will never bring back lost time; you will never undo the evil that has been done.

Close. Tolstoy takes the last two clauses of Ruskin's sentence about Wisdom (Athena), who 'never forgives' and 'avenges forever' the resistance offered her, and makes them a maxim of their own: 'the lost hour can never be redeemed' becomes 'you will never bring back lost time' (никогда не вернешь потерянного времени), 'the accomplished wrong never atoned for' becomes 'you will never put right the evil done' (никогда не исправишь сделанного зла). The same words stand in Thoughts of Wise Men (1903) under 12 February; The Path of Life (Jubilee vol. 45) works them into a sentence of its own, unsigned: «Если бы только мы чаще вспоминали о том, что никогда не вернешь потерянного времени, никогда не переделаешь сделанного зла, мы больше бы делали добра». The commentary of Jubilee vol. 40 names L. P. Nikiforov's Russian «Избранные мысли Джона Рёскина» (Posrednik, 1902) as the source of its Ruskin; it was not found online. Faithful to the English: printable offered; a reviewer may judge 'atoned for' made «исправишь» (put right) enough to keep Tolstoy's version.

    3. Only when we are sure of our eternity shall we be able to make use of every minute.

Only when we bring into it the consciousness of our spirituality will the most trifling duty not seem low to us.

    Martineau.

    What changed

Economizing moments “when we anticipate for ourselves an eternity” becomes using every minute “when we are sure of our eternity,” and transfiguring duty “by the glory of our own spirit” becomes bringing into it “the consciousness of our spirituality.”

Changed in its second sentence. Unity's selection cuts Martineau's first sentence after 'an eternity', leaving out 'and lose no grain of wisdom, when we discern the glorious and immortal structure which its successive accumulations shall raise', and Tolstoy's thought has the same cut, so the selection was his source. 'Then only shall we wisely economize moments when we anticipate for ourselves an eternity' becomes 'Only then shall we be able to make use of every minute, when we are sure of our eternity' (когда мы будем уверены в своей вечности). 'Then will even the merest drudgery of duty cease to humble us, when we transfigure it by the glory of our own spirit' becomes 'Only when we bring into it the consciousness of our spirituality will the most trifling duty not seem low to us' (Только когда мы внесем в нее сознание нашей духовности, самая ничтожная обязанность не будет казаться нам низкою): Martineau's transfiguring 'glory of our own spirit' becomes the 'consciousness of our spirituality'. The Jubilee name index calls «Мартино» Harriet Martineau, as in earlier months; the author is James.

    4. The first and most common temptation that takes hold of us is the temptation of preparing for life instead of life itself.

“Now I may step back for a while from what I ought to do and what my spiritual nature requires, because I am not ready,” we say to ourselves. “But I will get ready, the time will come, and then I will begin to live fully in accordance with my conscience.”

The falseness of this temptation is that we step back from life in the present, the one real life, and carry it over into the future, whereas the future does not belong to us.

In order not to fall into this temptation, we must understand and remember that there is no time to prepare, that we must live in the best way now, just as we are, that the perfecting we need is one alone, perfecting in love, and that this perfecting is accomplished only in the present. And therefore we must, without putting it off, live every minute with all our strength in the present, for God, that is, for all those who make demands on our life, knowing that at any minute we may be deprived of the possibility of this service, and that it is for this very service of every hour that we came into the world.

The present is the state in which alone our divine essence shows itself. Let us, then, revere the present — God is in it.
