The foundation of the order of ancient society is violence; the foundation of the order of society proper to our time is rational agreement and the rejection of violence.
1. You have heard that it was said: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you: Do not resist evil. But whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

2. He who is skilled in using men is humble. This is called the virtue of nonresistance. This is called accord with Heaven.

What changedCarus’s “virtue of not-striving,” the virtue of not contending (Legge: “He ne’er contends”), becomes “the virtue of nonresistance,” Tolstoy’s own word for his teaching; “utilising men’s ability” is left out.

Carus's English of chapter 68, through Tolstoy's 1903 version (Thoughts of Wise Men, 6 September), cut to its last lines. Carus: 'He who excels as a warrior is not warlike. He who excels as a fighter is not wrathful. He who excels in conquering the enemy does not strive. He who excels in employing men is lowly. This is called the virtue of not-striving. This is called utilising men's ability. This is called complying with heaven—since olden times the highest.' The 1903 text keeps the warrior and the fighter; the Circle begins at the employer of men. In both, Carus's 'the virtue of not-striving' (不爭之德, the virtue of not contending) is «добродетелью непротивления» (the virtue of non-resistance), Tolstoy's own term for his teaching; 'utilising men's ability' and 'since olden times the highest' are left out. The Chinese: 'he who uses men well puts himself below them; this is called the virtue of not contending, this is called using the strength of men, this is called matching Heaven, the utmost of antiquity.'
3. Those who think that people cannot be guided otherwise than by violence, disregarding their reason, do to people what is done to horses, blinding them so that they will go around in a circle more meekly.
4. So-called educated people — those who ought to set an example of the attitude toward violence that is proper to a rational being — learned, liberal, even revolutionary people reason, condemn, and preach freedom and human dignity. But all this lasts only until someone whistles for him to come and be put in harness. And all the reasoning, and all the liberalism, and the talk of freedom come to an end; and they dress him in a gaudy livery, put a rifle or a saber in his hands, and order him to run, and jump, and stand, and turn about, and put on his cap, and bow, and shout “hurrah,” and, above all, to be ready on command to kill his own father; and he — liberal, scholar, revolutionary, preacher of freedom — jumps, and bows to whomever he is told to, and shouts “hurrah,” and is ready to kill with his rifle whomever he is ordered to.
So it is that the very people — the educated, for whom it would be most natural of all to strive to bring life into accord with consciousness — these people do not believe in what they preach, in what they teach.
5. What, then, is people’s reason for, if they can be acted upon only by violence?
In every case where violence is used, apply rational persuasion, and you will seldom lose in the worldly sense, while in your spiritual consciousness you will feel complete satisfaction.
