Всё, что совершается в жизни отдельного человека и человеческих обществ, имело свое начало в мысли. И потому объяснение всего того, что случается с людьми — не в предшествующих событиях, а в предшествовавших событиям мыслях.

Everything that takes place in the life of the individual and of human societies had its beginning in thought. And so the explanation of all that happens to people lies not in the events that went before, but in the thoughts that went before the events.

  1. 1. Едва ли не важнее знать то, о чем не надо думать, чем то, о чем надо думать.

    1. It is perhaps more important to know what not to think about than what to think about.

  2. 2. Наша жизнь — следствие наших мыслей; она исходит из наших мыслей. Если человек говорит или действует со злою мыслью, — страдание неотступно следует за ним, как колесо за ногами вола, влекущего повозку.

Наша жизнь — следствие наших мыслей; она рождается в нашем сердце, она творится нашею мыслью. Если человек говорит или действует с доброю мыслью, — радость следует за ним, как тень, никогда не покидающая.

    Буддийская мудрость. [Дхаммапада.]

    2. Our life is the consequence of our thoughts; it proceeds from our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought — suffering follows him relentlessly, as the wheel follows the feet of the ox that draws the cart.

Our life is the consequence of our thoughts; it is born in our heart, it is made by our thought. If a man speaks or acts with a good thought — joy follows him like a shadow that never departs.

    1. All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage.

A close Russian of Max Müller's verses 1 and 2 ('the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage'); in the second verse 'founded on our thoughts' becomes 'рождается в нашем сердце'.

  3. 3. Человек не изменится оттого, что выбелится его обиталище. Благо народа не увеличится оттого, что ему дадут возможность бòльших удовольствий и материальных удобств. Душа творит свое тело. Только мысль устраивает достойное для себя жилище.

    Мадзини.

    3. A man will not change because his dwelling is whitewashed. The good of a people will not increase because it is given the means to greater pleasures and material comforts. The soul creates its body. Only thought builds a dwelling worthy of itself.

    Mazzini.

From Europe: Its Condition and Prospects · shortened by Tolstoy .
    Mazzini’s own words
Man is not changed by whitewashing or gilding his habitation ; a people cannot be regenerated by teaching them the worship of enjoyment ; …
It is the soul which creates to itself a body ; the idea which makes for itself a habitation.

Published in English. Tolstoy condenses: "or gilding" is dropped, "a people cannot be regenerated by teaching them the worship of enjoyment" becomes «Благо народа не увеличится оттого, что ему дадут возможность бòльших удовольствий и материальных удобств», and the clause on sacrifice is left out. 4. 4. Наши привычные мысли придают в нашем уме свойственную им окраску всему, с чем мы приходим в соприкосновение. Ложны эти мысли — и они извратят наиболее возвышенные истины. Атмосфера, создаваемая вокруг нас нашими привычными мыслями, представляет из себя для каждого из нас нечто более твердое, чем дом, в котором мы живем. Она является чем-то вроде раковины улитки, которую она всюду носит с собой.

    Люси Малори.

    4. The thoughts we have cultivated will color, in our minds, everything we have to do with. If the thoughts are erroneous they will distort the most sublime truths. The atmosphere that emanates from our habitual thoughts is a more solid structure around us than the house we live in. It is like the snail’s shell — we carry it with us wherever we go.

    Lucy Mallory.

From The World's Advance-Thought and the Universal Republic · close to the original .
    Tolstoy’s version, in English
Our habitual thoughts lend, in our mind, their own coloring to everything we come into contact with. Let these thoughts be false — and they will distort the loftiest truths. The atmosphere created around us by our habitual thoughts is, for each of us, something more solid than the house we live in. It is something like a snail’s shell, which the snail carries everywhere with it.
    Lucy Mallory’s own words

Close. 'The thoughts we have cultivated' becomes 'our habitual thoughts'; 'we carry it with us' becomes 'which it (the snail) carries with it'. Tolstoy leaves out Mallory's last sentence, on evil companions drawn by our spiritual atmosphere. The paragraph is signed 'L. A. M.'. Her first four sentences are printed here.

Translation note. Tolstoy kept the author’s words closely, so the author’s own English is printed here (ruling 1); Tolstoy’s Russian, translated, is in the source panel.

  5. 5. Наша мысль, хорошая или дурная, отправляет нас в рай или в ад, не на небе и не под землей, а здесь, в этой жизни.

    5. Our thought, good or bad, sends us to paradise or to hell, not in heaven and not under the earth, but here, in this life.

Not found. Mallory says the like often in other words, e.g. 'Heaven or Hell is what the mind has mentally builded' (May 1897) and 'Heaven and Hell are cultivated habits' (July 1901); none is Tolstoy's sentence, with its 'not in the sky or under the earth, but here, in this life'.

  6. 6. Мысль кажется свободною, но в человеке есть нечто могущественнее ее, могущее управлять ею.

    6. Thought seems free, but there is something in us more powerful than thought, which can govern it.

Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the commas; the English sets the line as one span.

Для того, чтобы изменить установившийся ход жизни в себе или в людях, надо бороться не с событиями, а с теми мыслями, которые произвели и производят их.

To change the settled course of life in ourselves or in other people, we must struggle not against events but against the thoughts that have produced them and are producing them.
