Justice is achieved not by striving for justice, but by love.
Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the comma; it is set here as one span.
1. Just as, to hit the mark, you must aim beyond it, so, to be just, you must be self-denying, that is, unjust to yourself. But if you wish to be only just, you will be partial to yourself and unjust to others.
2. None of us can be wholly just in all that we do. But the just differ from the unjust by their effort to be just, as the truthful differ from liars by their effort to speak only the truth.
3. There is something worse than injustice: the hypocrisy of virtue, of love, and of the service of God, so often met with in the pseudo-Christian world. People who imagine or pretend that they are fulfilling the law of love free themselves from the demands of justice and carry their injustice to the point of complacent villainy. People give to churches and to the poor, and do works of charity, while what they give is the price of their brothers’ tears and blood.
4. A judge can be guided by justice in considering only one side of a question; but in life every question has many solutions, equally just but different, depending on the side from which the question is considered.
5. Only one thing in life is precious: while constantly coming up against the lies and injustice of men, not to tire of being gentle oneself.
From Meditations · reworded by Tolstoy .
What changedPassing one’s life “in truth and justice,” kept in Tolstoy’s 1903 version, drops out, so the one precious thing is to be gentle: “not to tire of being gentle oneself” while “constantly coming up against the lies and injustice of men.”

Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), 19 April, shortened. Marcus ends VI.47, after the roll of the famous dead: "One thing here is worth a great deal, to pass thy life in truth and justice, with a benevolent disposition even to liars and unjust men." The 1903 version keeps truth and justice, «хранить правду и поступать по справедливости» (to keep to truth and act justly); the Circle drops them, so that the one precious thing is «беспрестанно сталкиваясь с людскою ложью и несправедливостью, не уставать самому быть кротким» (constantly meeting human lies and injustice, not to tire of being meek oneself). "εὐμενῆ" (kindly disposed) becomes «кротким» (meek), the liars and unjust men become "human lies and injustice", and «беспрестанно сталкиваясь» (constantly meeting) and «не уставать» (not to tire) are added. The 1903 Marcus Aurelius came from the Posrednik edition of the Meditations, L. D. Urusov's translation (Jubilee vol. 40 commentary); the saved scan of Urusov (sources/marcus-urusov-1882) has no text layer and was not compared.
6. You suffer from injustices — take comfort: the truly unhappy are not those who endure them, but those who act unjustly.
You cannot be exactly just. You will either do too little or do too much. To keep from sinning against justice there is one means: always to do too much.
