Labor, the exercise of our powers, is a necessary condition of life. We can make others do what we need, but we cannot free ourselves from the bodily need for work. If we do not do work that is needed and reasonable, we will do work that is needless and foolish.

    1. Human beings, like every animal, are so created that they must work in order not to die of hunger and cold. And this work, to feed themselves and shelter themselves from bad weather, is, for human beings as for every animal, not torment but joy. But people have so arranged their lives that some do no work themselves, but make others work for them, and are bored because they do not know what to do, and invent all sorts of foolish and nasty things to occupy themselves, while others work beyond their strength and are bored with their work, bored because they have to work not for themselves but for others.

It is bad for both. For the first, who do not work, it is bad because through idleness they ruin their souls; for the second, it is bad that they wear out their bodies beyond their strength.

But those who work are still better off than those who do not. The soul is more precious than the body.

    2. If the work is the chief thing for you, and the pay a secondary matter, then your master will be labor and its creator — God. But if the work is a secondary matter for you, and the pay the chief thing, then you are slaves of the pay and of its creator — the devil, and moreover the lowest and last of devils.

    Ruskin’s own words
If your work is first with you, and your fee second, work is your master, and the lord of work, who is God. But if your fee is first with you, and your work second, fee is your master, and the lord of fee, who is the Devil; and not only the Devil, but the lowest of devils--the 'least erected fiend that fell.'

A close translation of two sentences, clause by clause. 'the lord of work' and 'the lord of fee' become 'its creator' (его творец, творца ее); 'fee is your master' becomes 'you are slaves of pay' (вы рабы платы); Milton's 'least erected fiend that fell' becomes 'the last of devils' (последнего из дьяволов). Nothing inside the passage is left out. The 1903 version (8 June) is the same but for 'is' (является) where the Circle has 'will be' (будет). The Jubilee commentary on Thoughts of Wise Men names the source of its Ruskin: L. P. Nikiforov's Russian selection, «Избранные мысли Джона Рёскина» (Posrednik, 1902); the Circle's list adds its third part (1904).

    3. The devil, catching people on his line, baits it with all sorts of lures. But for the idle none are needed: they go for the bare hook.

    4. A European extols to a Chinese man the advantage of machine production: “It frees people from labor.” “But labor is a good. Being freed from labor would be a great calamity,” the Chinese man answers.

    5. All manual labor ennobles a man. Not to teach a son manual labor is the same as preparing him for robbery.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Babylonian Talmud, Nedarim; Babylonian Talmud, Kiddushin, Nedarim 49b; Kiddushin 29a (discussed at 30b).

Two sayings joined. (1) 'Great is labour, for it honours its master' (gedolah melakhah she-mekhabbedet et ba'aleha), said by R. Judah as he carried a jar to the study house and by R. Simeon as he carried a basket (Nedarim 49b). (2) R. Judah's 'whoever does not teach his son a craft (umanut) teaches him banditry' (a baraita in Kiddushin 29a; at 30b the Gemara reads it 'as if he taught him banditry'). Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), 16 March, has «Всякий труд важен, ибо облагораживает человека» and «Не обучать сына какому-нибудь ремеслу». For the Circle Tolstoy wrote «ручной труд» (manual labour) in both sentences: 'labour' becomes 'all manual labour', and the craft (umanut, «ремесло» in 1903) becomes manual labour. 'Honours its master' is «облагораживает человека» in both versions.

Translation note. The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the dash; the English sets the passage as one.

Without exercising its muscles an animal cannot live, and neither can a human being.

And for this exercise to satisfy and gladden, it must be put to what is useful, and best of all to the service of others. That is its best use.
