Плодотворная молитва есть восстановление в своем сознании того высшего понимания смысла своей жизни, до которого ты достиг в самые лучшие минуты.
Fruitful prayer is to restore in your consciousness that highest understanding of the meaning of your life which you reached in your very best moments.
1. Prayer, understood as an inward formal worship and therefore as a means of winning favor for oneself, is a superstitious delusion. For it is nothing other than a declared wish addressed to a being who has no need of any declaration. By such prayer we in essence do nothing, and we fulfill not one of the duties laid upon us as God’s commandments; and consequently we do not truly serve God either.
The heartfelt wish to be pleasing to God in all our conduct — in other words, that all our actions should be accompanied by the disposition to perform them as though, in performing them, we were in the service of God — this is what the spirit of prayer consists in, which can and ought to dwell in us unfailingly. But to clothe this wish in words and formulas (even if only inwardly) can at most have only the value of a means of quickening such a disposition in ourselves.
Kant.

Source text: archive.orgIn English · J. W. Semple, 1838Prayer, regarded as an internal formal worship of the Deity, and so as a mean of grace, is a superstitious delusion.
It is nothing more than an uttered wish : declared moreover in the presence of a Being who stands in need of no information touching the inward sentiments of the declarant.
By prayer there is consequently nothing done ; and none of those duties, which, as were they commandments of God, are incumbent upon us, are discharged.
… words, the standing bent and ply of mind pervading all our actions, and inducing us to perform them, as ivere they done for the service of God, — is that spirit of prayer that can and ought without ceasing to obtain within.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Die Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der bloßen Vernunft (1793), Book IV, Part 2, General Remark, as excerpted in Raoul Richter, Kant-Aussprüche (1901), Kant-Aussprüche no. 239, under «Religion: Die religiöse Gesinnung»; Semple (1838), Book IV, pp. 265–267.
Kant's passage, closely, with a few words left out. Left out: “(ein Fetischmachen)” (a making of fetishes) after «суеверное заблуждение» (a superstitious delusion), and “der inneren Gesinnung des Wünschenden” (of the inner disposition of the one who wishes), so that God is a being who needs «ни в каком заявлении» (no declaration at all) where Kant's needs no declaration of the wisher's disposition. “Gnadenmittel” (a means of grace) becomes «средство снискать себе милость» (a means of winning favor for oneself); “d. i.” (that is) becomes «другими словами» (in other words); Kant's quoted “ohne Unterlaß” (without ceasing, 1 Thessalonians 5:17) becomes «неукоснительно» (unfailingly), without quotation marks; “zu wiederholter Belebung” (for the repeated reviving) becomes «для оживления» (for the reviving). Tolstoy adds «в сущности» (in essence) and sets the second half as a paragraph of its own. Richter's text reads “ein Wesen, daß keiner Erklärung … bedarf” (for “das”); its first sentence runs over a page, so the first excerpt ends mid-sentence. Semple's English is free; its last excerpt is the second half of the sentence on the spirit of prayer, which begins on the page before (“The heartfelt wish, that in everything we compass or avoid, we may be found well-pleasing in God's sight — i. e. in other words …”).
Translation note. «Действительна» is read as «действительно», “truly”; the printed ending is a slip.
2. Итак, если ты принесешь дар твой к жертвеннику и там вспомнишь, что брат твой имеет что-нибудь против тебя, оставь там дар твой пред жертвенником и пойди прежде примирись с братом твоим и тогда приди и принеси дар твой.
2. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

The Russian Bible (Synodal translation)Итак, если ты принесешь дар твой к жертвеннику и там вспомнишь, что брат твой имеет что-нибудь против тебя, …
… оставь там дар твой пред жертвенником, и пойди прежде примирись с братом твоим, и тогда приди и принеси дар твой.

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

3. Иногда хочется по-детски кому-то (богу) жаловаться, просить помощи. Хорошо ли это чувство? Нехорошо — это слабость, неверие. То, что больше всего похоже на веру: просительная молитва, есть именно неверие — неверие в то, что зла нет, что просить не о чем, что если тебе худо, то это только показывает тебе, что тебе надо поправиться, что происходит то самое, что должно быть и при чем ты должен делать, что должен.
3. Sometimes you want, as a child does, to complain to someone (to God), to ask for help. Is this feeling a good one? It is not good — it is weakness, unbelief. What most resembles faith, the prayer of petition, is precisely unbelief — unbelief in this: that there is no evil, that there is nothing to ask for, that if things are bad for you, this only shows you that you need to mend your ways, that what is happening is the very thing that ought to be, and that in it you ought to do what you ought.
4. А молясь, не говорите лишнего, как язычники; ибо они думают, что в многословии своем будут услышаны; не уподобляйтесь им; ибо знает отец ваш, в чем вы имеете нужду, прежде вашего прошения у него.
4. And in praying, do not say what is superfluous, as the pagans do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words; do not be like them; for your Father knows what you have need of before you ask him.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Matthew, 6:7–8.
Signed Matthew 6:9, which is "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven". The words are the two verses before it, 6:7–8, in the Synodal text word for word, with semicolons for the commas before each «ибо» (for) and «отец» and «него» in lower case. The correction is certain: the Circle prints the same verses on February 25, within Matthew 6:5–8 and signed so. Not in Thoughts of Wise Men (1903).
Translation note. The verses are Matthew 6:7–8; the reference is printed as Matthew 6:9 and kept. The KJV has “use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”
5. Один час честной, серьезной мысли дороже недель восторженного обожания, когда обожание не проявляется поступками.
5. One hour of honest, serious thought is worth more than weeks of rapturous adoration when the adoration is not shown in deeds.

Not found. The Jubilee name index refers «Гаррисон» on this page (vol. 41, p. 586) to «Гаррисон Фредерик (1831—1923) — английский писатель, позитивист», Frederic Harrison, and not to William Lloyd Garrison, whose Declaration is a weekly reading of December; the Russian spelling fits either. The thought, that one hour of honest, earnest thought is worth more than weeks of rapturous adoration that is not shown in deeds, fits Harrison's positivist writing on worship, but it was not found in the seven of his books searched. Tolstoy prints the whole thought in italics.
Searched: Every occurrence of 'adoration', and 'hour of' near thought, in Frederic Harrison's The Creed of a Layman (1907), The Philosophy of Common Sense (1907), The Choice of Books (1886), The Meaning of History (1894), Memories and Thoughts (1906), National and Social Problems (1908), and Realities and Ideals (1908), all from archive.org; 'hour of honest/earnest/serious/real' and 'weeks of' near adoration, worship, devotion or rapture in every saved source text (Garrison's Life, Southgate, Coit, and Tileston among them) and in the 108 issues of The World's Advance-Thought; web searches for the English wording.
Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the commas; it is set here as one span. The Jubilee edition’s index of names takes «Гаррисон» to be Frederic Harrison, the English positivist; the Russian spelling would also fit William Lloyd Garrison.
6. Преданность воле божьей — необходимое условие христианской жизни — исключает возможность определенного желания и потому прошения, молитвы о том, чтобы случилось то-то и то-то.
6. Devotion to the will of God — the necessary condition of the Christian life — excludes the possibility of any particular wish, and therefore of petition, of prayer that this or that should happen.
Молитесь ежечасно. Самая нужная и самая трудная молитва — это воспоминание среди движения жизни о своих обязанностях перед богом и законом его. Испугался, рассердился, смутился, увлекся — вспомни, кто ты и что ты должен делать. В этом молитва. Это трудно сначала, но привычку эту можно выработать.
Pray every hour. The most needful and the most difficult prayer is to remember, amid the movement of life, your duties before God and his law. You have taken fright, grown angry, become confused, been carried away — remember who you are and what you must do. This is prayer. It is difficult at first, but this habit can be formed.
