Nothing so hinders the spread of truth as obstinately holding on to an ancient tradition hallowed by time.
1. They say: God created man in his own image. This probably means that man created God in his own image.

Faithful. Lichtenberg writes "God created man in his image, that means probably that man created God in his"; Tolstoy adds "They say" and writes out "in his own image" the second time.
2. In the inclination to believe what we are told lie good and evil. It is just this inclination that makes the forward movement of society possible, and just this inclination that makes that forward movement so slow and painful: thanks to it, each generation receives without effort the knowledge that comes to it by inheritance, acquired by hard labor, and thanks to it, each generation finds itself enslaved by the mistakes and errors of its predecessors.
From Social Problems · shortened by Tolstoy .
Henry George’s own wordsIn this tendency to accept what we find, to believe what we are told, is at once good and evil. It is this which makes social advance possible ; it is this which makes it so slow and painful. Each generation thus obtains without effort the hard-won knowledge bequeathed to it; it is thus, also, enslaved by errors and perversions which it in the same way receives.

Close to George's English, but not word for word, so the day keeps Tolstoy's version (ruling 1): he drops "to accept what we find", and where George ends "enslaved by errors and perversions which it in the same way receives" Tolstoy has "enslaved by the mistakes and errors of its predecessors". The next sentence, "It is thus that tyranny is maintained and superstition perpetuated", is left out. Tolstoy used the passage again in The Path of Life (Jubilee vol. 45).
3. Humanity moves forward slowly but without stopping, toward an ever greater clarification of the truth about the meaning and significance of its life, and toward a life in keeping with this clarified consciousness. And so people’s understanding of their life, and human life itself, are constantly changing. People more sensitive to the truth understand life in accordance with the highest light they can see, and arrange their lives according to that light; people less sensitive keep to the former understanding of life and the former order of life, and try to defend it.
So in the world there are always, beside the people who point to the foremost, latest expression of the truth and try to live in accordance with that expression, people who defend the former understanding of it, outworn and no longer needed, and the former ways of life.
4. Of all the deceptions of faith, the cruelest is the instilling of a false faith in children by suggestion. It consists in this: children ask their elders, who have lived before them and have had the chance to come to know the wisdom of those who lived before, what this world is, what their own life is, and what relation there is between the two; and they are answered not with what these elders themselves think and know, but with what people thought who lived thousands of years ago, and what none of the grown-ups believes any longer, or can believe. In place of the spiritual life they need and ask for, they are given a poison that ruins their spiritual health, from which they can be healed only by the greatest efforts and sufferings.
Translation note. «Его жизнь» is read as the child’s own life, set beside the world: what the world is, what one’s life is, and how the two are related. The Russian speaks of one child; the English uses the plural.
Disrespect for tradition has not done a thousandth part of the evil caused by this respect for customs, laws, institutions that in our time no longer have any reasonable justification.
