A woman does not differ from a man in her fundamental calling in life. That calling is the service of God. The difference is only in the object of the service. Although a woman’s calling in life is the same as a man’s, to serve God, and is fulfilled by the same means — love — for most women the object of this service is more definite than for a man. That object is the rearing and upbringing, in love, of ever new workers for the work of God.

    1. Tell me, woman of luxury, if someone were to ask you which you would rather wish for — to have a body clean, healthy and beautiful and wear poor clothing, or to have a body deformed and sick, but go about in gold and flaunt your finery. Would you not far sooner want comeliness in the very nature of your body than in the splendor of your clothes? Will you, then, wish for this in what concerns your body, and for the opposite in what concerns your soul? With a soul loathsome, misshapen and black, do you really think you gain anything by ornaments of gold? Is this not the height of madness?

For tell me, if any one asked thee which thou wouldest choose, that thy body should be fresh and of good habit and surpassing in beauty, and wear mean raiment, or having the body deformed and full of diseases, to wear gold and finery; wouldest thou not much prefer to have beauty depending on the nature of thy person, than on the raiment with which thou art clothed?
And wilt thou choose this in the case of thy body, but the contrary in the case of thy soul; and, when thou hast that ugly and unsightly and black, dost thou think to gain anything from golden ornaments? What madness is this!

Close, sentence for sentence. The homily at this point addresses the women of the congregation (it goes on to their husbands), and Tolstoy makes that explicit with 'luxurious woman'; 'What madness is this!' becomes a question, 'Is this not the height of madness?'. Tolstoy's source, per the Jubilee list, was the Posrednik selection «Наставления св. (1888), not found online; the Greek (Migne, PG 59) was not consulted.

    2. If a woman’s goodness is boundless, it happens too that her malice has no end.

A good wife is a precious gift to her husband; a wicked one is a malignant sore to him.

Two sayings from the same page. The first sentence loosely renders Rava's 'Come and see how good a good wife is and how bad a bad wife is'; the second is Ben Sira as the Talmud quotes it ('a good wife is a good gift to her husband ... a bad wife is leprosy to her husband'), with 'leprosy' as 'a malignant sore'. The Talmud goes on 'what is his remedy? let him divorce her', which Tolstoy drops. Taken, with the same wording, from his 1903 anthology, itself drawn from a Russian Talmud anthology not checked.

    3. Gentle words, and few of them, are a woman’s finest adornment.

    4. Walk through a big city and look at what is sold in the best shops, at what costs millions and is the product of the heavy, often deadly labor of millions of workers. All these are articles of luxury used by women, things that can be done without. If only women understood the evil their frivolous, needless luxury does!

Translation note. «Честная», of a woman, means honorable and chaste as well as honest; rendered “honorable” and “honor”.

    6. It is not the husband who chooses the wife, but the wife who chooses the husband. To choose the best father for her children, a woman must know what is good and what is evil. And this, above all, is what women ought to learn.

    7. A truly chaste young woman who gives to the service of God, shown in love for people, all the strength of motherly self-denial that was given her is the most beautiful and the happiest of human beings.

    8. Nothing is so natural to a woman as self-denial. And nothing so turns people away from her as selfishness.

Perfection for a man and for a woman is one and the same: the perfection of love. If a man often surpasses a woman in the reasonableness and steadfastness of love, a woman always surpasses a man in self-denial in love.
