Faith determines life.
1. Religious knowledge is the knowledge on which all other knowledge rests. And therefore it precedes all knowledge.
2. To understand that all people are equal, that it is better for us to give our lives to the service of others than to make other people serve us, we must determine our relation to the world; and only religion gives such a determination of our relation to the world.
3. Attempts to found morality apart from religion are like what children do when, wishing to transplant a plant they like, they tear off its root, which they do not like and which seems to them superfluous, and stick the plant into the ground without a root. Without a religious foundation there can be no real, unfeigned morality, just as without a root there can be no real plant.
4. At confession a priest put the usual question to a good peasant, one who lived a good life: did he believe in God?
“I have sinned: I don’t believe,” the peasant answered.
“What? You don’t believe in God?”
“I don’t, Father. If I believed, would I live the way I do? You think only of yourself: you eat, you drink, and you forget God and your brothers.”
What would happen if everyone understood faith as this peasant does, and believed in the law of Christ?
Translation note. «На духу», literally “at the spirit,” is the ordinary Russian for “at confession.”
5. There are two faiths: faith as trust in what people say — this is faith in a person or in people, and there are many different faiths of this kind; and faith in my dependence on the one who sent me into the world. This is faith in God, and this faith is one for all people.
6. Faith is an inevitable property of the soul.
We inevitably believe in something. We inevitably believe because, besides the things we know, we also enter into relation with what we cannot know, and yet at the same time we know that it exists. It is our relation to this incomprehensible that is faith.
7. Every one of us always feels, in the same way, the insignificance of all that is intelligible, as well as the greatness of something unintelligible and supremely important.
8. Whatever our situation, the ideal given by Christ in his teaching is always enough for us to obtain the surest indication of the acts we ought and ought not to perform. But we must believe in this teaching fully, in this teaching alone, and stop believing in all others, just as a seafarer must believe in the compass and stop peering around and being guided by what is seen on either side.
Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the commas; it is set here as one span.
9. There are people who assert that they have no faith at all. This is untrue. They merely do not know their faith, or cannot or will not put it into words, but they have it. And they disown their faith only because they feel that it is not good.
10. A man’s “religion” consists not of the many things he doubts and tries to believe, but of the few things he is sure of, belief in which demands no labor of him.

Not found. The thought, that a man's 'religion' is the few things he is sure of and believes without effort, and not the many he doubts and tries to believe, is close in sense to Heroes, Lecture I ('the thing a man does practically believe ... that is his religion'), but that passage has no contrast of the many doubted things with the few certain ones, and the wording was found nowhere in Carlyle's saved works. Tolstoy sets «Религия» in quotation marks, as if quoting a word of his source. It may have come through Nikiforov's Russian selection «Загадка сфинкса» (1900), which is not online.
Searched: 'in doubt of', 'tries to believe', 'assured of', 'effort for believing', 'religion consists', and sentences with 'religion' near believe, doubt, sure or certain in the same Carlyle texts as 8-1.8; Southgate's two anthologies, Klopsch, Coit, and Tileston; web searches for the English wording.
Try to become conscious of your faith, of that in the name of which you live. This will help you to correct it if it is mistaken, and to grow firm in it if it is true.
