The calling of woman and of man is one and the same: the service of God. But the ways in which each sex serves are different and precisely defined. And so each sex must serve God in its own way, the way defined for it. The chief, the exclusive work of woman — given to her alone, and necessary for the life and the perfecting of humanity — is the bearing and early upbringing of children. And so all a woman’s strength and attention must be directed to this work and to what touches on it. A woman can do everything a man does, but a man cannot do what a woman does (childbearing and early upbringing). And so a woman must put all her strength into doing well the work (of childbearing and early upbringing) that she alone can do.

    1. A woman, the mother of a family, who does not know how to be happy at home will not be happy anywhere.

    2. The service of humanity divides of itself into two parts: the one, increasing the good in humanity as it exists; the other, continuing humanity itself. Men are called chiefly to the first; women are called chiefly to the second.

    3. Man and woman are the two notes without which the strings of the human soul do not give a true and full chord.

    Giuseppe Mazzini.

“The Human chord is impossible” is spelled out: without the two notes “the strings of the human soul do not give a true and full chord.”

One sentence of the chapter on the family, enlarged. Mazzini's 'l'accordo umano non è possibile' (the human chord is not possible) becomes «струны человеческой души не дают правильного и полного аккорда» (the strings of the human soul give no right and full chord): the strings, the soul, and 'right and full' are the Russian's. The Russian puts the man first, as Venturi's English does ('Man and woman'); Mazzini wrote «La donna e l'uomo». December found other Mazzini entries made from Venturi's English. L. P. Nikiforov's Russian selection of Mazzini (Посредник, 1905), named in the Jubilee list of the Circle's sources, was not seen.

    4. There is a strange, deep-rooted error that cooking, sewing, washing, and minding children are exclusively women’s work, and that for a man to do them is even shameful. And yet it is the reverse that is shameful: it is shameful for a man, often with nothing to do, to spend his time on trifles or do nothing at all, while a tired, often weak, pregnant woman struggles beyond her strength to cook, to wash, or to nurse a sick child.

    5. The whole world and everything in it is beautiful, but the most beautiful thing in the world is a virtuous woman.

    Muhammad.

Hadith: Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Rada, no. 1467; in Mishkat al-Masabih, Book of Marriage, Muslim 1467 (chapter: the best enjoyment of the world is the righteous woman); Matthews, Mishcat-ul-Masabih vol. II, Book XIII, ch. I, part I, p. 77.

Matthews's English of the Mishkat, which gave the Muhammad sayings of April, May, and December: 'The world and all things in it are valuable; but the most valuable thing in the world, is a virtuous woman.' Tolstoy makes 'valuable' beautiful: «Весь мир и всё в нем прекрасно, но самое прекрасное в мире — это добродетельная женщина» (the whole world and all in it is beautiful, but the most beautiful thing in the world is a virtuous woman). The Arabic of Muslim 1467 says 'the world is enjoyment (matāʿ), and the best enjoyment of the world is the righteous woman.' Tolstoy's later selection «Изречения Магомета, не вошедшие в Коран» (1909), translated for him by S. D. Nikolaev from Abdullah al-Suhrawardy's The Sayings of Mahomet, which he read in 1908 (Jubilee vol. 40 commentary), has the same saying as «Драгоценен мир…» (precious), nearer Matthews's 'valuable'; Suhrawardy's text was not checked. Not in Thoughts of Wise Men (1903) or Conway.

Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the comma and the dash; it is set here as one span.

    6. The virtues of a woman and of a man are one and the same: self-restraint, truthfulness, kindness. But in a woman the same virtues take on a particular charm.

    7. Childbearing is for a woman a school of self-renunciation. Having developed in herself the capacity for self-renunciation, a woman readily shows it in the other conditions of life as well.

    8. A woman who tries to resemble a man is as ugly as an effeminate man.

    9. The true and lasting union of a man and a woman lies only in spiritual communion. Sexual relations without spiritual communion are a source of suffering for both spouses.

    10. A woman does a great work: she gives birth to children; but she does not give birth to thoughts — that the man does. A woman always only follows what has been brought in by the man and what is already widespread, and spreads it further. In the same way the man only brings up children; he does not give birth to them.

While you are unmarried, and once you have been freed from childbearing, do everything a man does; but know that the work in which nothing can take the place of a woman is childbearing and early upbringing.
