If a good life calls forth not love but persecution among people living an evil life, this not only does not shake our certainty that such a life is right, but, on the contrary, confirms it by the surest of signs.
1. Beware then of men: for they will deliver you up to the courts, and in their synagogues they will beat you, and they will lead you before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony before them and the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, take no care how or what to say: for in that hour it will be given you what to say; for it is not you who will speak, but the spirit of your father will speak in you.

And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

Translation note. Tolstoy’s wording; the KJV has “deliver you up to the councils … scourge you … be brought before governors and kings … take no thought”, and “the Spirit of your Father”.
2. Even death cannot destroy the triumph of one who fights with all his strength for a righteous cause. Fight on, then, unbending, faithful heart; go forward, heedless of fortune and misfortune, and be assured that the righteous cause for which you fight will win. Only what is unjust will perish; the righteous cause cannot be defeated, because it is accomplished not by your will but by the eternal laws of God.

What changed“Nature’s own Laws” become “the eternal laws of God.”
Carlyle’s own wordsHis very death is no victory over him.
Fight on, thou brave true heart, and falter not, through dark fortune and through bright. The cause thou fightest for, so far as it is true, no farther, yet precisely so far, is very sure of victory. The falsehood alone of it will be conquered, will be abolished, as it ought to be: but the truth of it is part of Nature's own Laws, cooperates with the World's eternal Tendencies, and cannot be conquered.

Changed in the last sentence. The first two parts are close (Wallace and Scotland are left out between them; 'so far as it is true, no farther' is simplified to 'the right cause'). But Carlyle's 'the truth of it is part of Nature's own Laws, cooperates with the World's eternal Tendencies' becomes 'it is done not by your will but by the eternal laws of God' — Tolstoy puts God in place of Nature and adds 'not by your will'.
3. An obstacle on the way of good, overcome by an effort of the spirit, gives me new strength; what threatened to be a barrier to reaching the good itself becomes a good, and a bright way opens suddenly where no way out was to be seen.
From Meditations · reworded by Tolstoy .
What changedAdds a bright road opening “where no way out was to be seen.”
Original · Ancient Greek…
Source text: raw.githubusercontent.comIn English · George Long, 1862… for the mind converts and changes every hindrance to its activity into an aid; and so that which is a hindrance is made a furtherance to an act; and that which is an obstacle on the road helps us on this road.

Marcus speaks of men who obstruct one's proper acts; Tolstoy keeps only the core (the hindrance becomes a furtherance) and adds 'by an effort of spirit... gives me new strength' and the closing image of a bright road opening suddenly where no way out was seen, which is not in Marcus. Cf. also VIII.32 and VIII.35 for the same idea.
4. “He that endures to the end shall be saved.”
How often we despair and stop, or even turn back, when only a small effort was needed to reach the goal.
Translation note. Matthew 10:22 (unattributed in Tolstoy); KJV: “he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”
5. Persecution, provided only that it is borne with Christian meekness, produces the opposite of the effect the persecutors seek. People want to hide a fire that has appeared in the forest, and to put it out they press it to the ground with whatever is at hand: leaves, grass, brushwood, firewood; and the fire flares up more and more, and its light spreads further and further.
6. Persecution, and therefore suffering, is a necessary condition of fulfilling the Christian law. The degree of outward suffering shows the degree to which we follow Christ, as friction shows the degree of strain in any work.
7. Persecution is precious in that it breaks down every artificial prop and brings out into the open the real faith by which a person lives.
8. In persecution the danger is not the suffering, but the temptation of self-pity and the unkind feeling toward the persecutors that grows out of it.
Do not seek people’s love, and do not be troubled by their dislike. People are often loved for what is bad and disliked for what is good. Try to please not people, but God.
