Death and birth are two limits. Beyond these limits there is one and the same something.

    1. When you think about what will happen to the soul after death, you cannot help thinking also about what happened to the soul before birth. If you are going somewhere, then surely you set out from somewhere. So it is in life. If you have come into this life, then you came from somewhere. If you will live afterward, then you lived before as well.

    2. Where do we go after death? To where we came from. There, where we came from, what we call our “I” did not exist — and that is just why we do not remember where we were, how long we were there, and what was there. If after death we go to where we set out from, then after death too what we call our “I” will not exist.

That is why we can by no means understand what our life will be after death. One thing can be said for certain: as it was not bad for us before birth, so it cannot be bad after death either.

    3. When we live a good life, we are happy now and do not think about what will come after this life. And if we do remember death, then, judging by how well life is arranged for us now, we believe that after death too it will be just as good. To believe that God is good and has done and is doing all that is best for us is far more peaceful, and more certain, than to believe in all the bliss of paradise.

    4. When we are born, our souls are laid in the coffin of our body. This coffin — our body — gradually falls apart, and our soul is set free more and more. And when the body dies, the soul is wholly set free.

    After Heraclitus.

Probably from Fragment DK 22 B62 / B88, as glossed by Philo, Allegorical Interpretation I.108 · reworded by Tolstoy .
Not in Leo Tolstoy as Editor

Heraclitus’s own words survive only as “we live their death and die their life”; the soul buried in the body is the gloss of those who quote him, and Tolstoy’s intermediary was not found.

Well, therefore, did Heraclitus say this, following the doctrine of Moses; for he says, "We are living according to the death of those men; and we have died according to their life." As if he had said, Now, when we are alive, we are so though our soul is dead and buried in our body, as if in a tomb. But if it were to die, then our soul would live according to its proper life, being released from the evil and dead body to which it is bound.

    Details

A likely source, not certain. Fragment DK 22 B62 / B88, as glossed by Philo, Allegorical Interpretation I.108, Philo, Legum allegoriae I.108; compare Sextus Empiricus, Outlines of Pyrrhonism III.230.

Heraclitus's own words survive only as "we live their death and die their life" (DK B62); the soul buried in the body is the gloss of those who quote him. Tolstoy's thought is closest to Philo's gloss: while we live the soul is entombed in the body as in a tomb (σῆμα), and when we die it lives its own life, released from the evil, dead body bound to it. Sextus says the souls are "dead and buried in us" and "revive" at death, with no release. Tolstoy adds what neither has: the soul is laid in the coffin at birth, the coffin (the body) slowly decays, and the soul is freed "more and more" as it does. The «По» of the signature marks the free rendering. His intermediary was not found; the line is not in the Thoughts of Wise Men.

Translation note. The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the commas and dashes; the English sets the passage as one.

We need not guess at what will come after this life, but should try, in this life, to act according to the will of him who sent us, the will we know in our reason and our heart.
