Humanity moves forward without ceasing. There must be forward movement in faith as well.
1. The pattern of people’s lives depends on their faith. With the passage of time faith becomes ever simpler, more understandable, clearer, more in accord with true knowledge. And in step with the simplifying and clarifying of faith, people unite with one another more and more.
2. If a man thinks that we must stop at the understanding of faith that has been revealed to us now, he is very far from the truth. The light we have received was given to us not so that we should gaze at it without ceasing, but so that by it new truths, still hidden from us, might be revealed to us.

The light which we have gained was given us, not to be ever staring on, but by it to discover onward things more remote from our knowledge.
Source text: archive.orgAfter Milton’s own words… he who thinks we are to pitch our tent here, and have attained the utmost prospect of reformation that the mortal glass wherein we contemplate can show us, till we come to beatific vision, that man by this very opinion declares that he is yet far short of truth.
The light which we have gained was given us, not to be ever staring on, but by it to discover onward things more remote from our knowledge.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Areopagitica (1644), Two sentences some twenty lines apart, around the image of truth as Osiris torn.
Joined from two sentences. The first is condensed: 'pitch our tent here, and have attained the utmost prospect of reformation that the mortal glass ... can show us, till we come to beatific vision' becomes 'stop at the understanding of faith that has opened to us now'. The second is close, 'to discover onward things more remote from our knowledge' becoming 'new truths still hidden from us'. «По Мильтону» marks the retelling. Southgate's Suggestive Thoughts, in Tolstoy's list of sources, prints the whole stretch, both sentences included.
3. The spirit of Jesus, which the mighty of this world strive to stifle from the heights of their thrones and pulpits, nevertheless shows itself brightly everywhere. Has not the spirit of the Gospel penetrated the nations? Are they not beginning to see the light? Have not the notions of rights and of duties become clearer to everyone? Are not calls heard on every side for juster laws, for institutions that protect the weak and are founded on just equality? Is not the old enmity dying out between those whom sovereigns kept divided? Do not the nations feel themselves brothers? The oppressors already tremble, as though an inner voice foretold their speedy end. Alarmed by terrible visions, the kings convulsively clutch in their hands the chains in which they have bound the nations whom Christ came to set free, and which will soon fall apart. An underground rumbling troubles their sleep. In the secret depths of society a work is going on that they cannot stop with all the strength of their power, and whose unceasing progress throws them into inexpressible alarm. It is the work of a germ ready to unfold, the work of love, which will take away the sin of the world, revive the failing life, comfort the afflicted, break the fetters of the prisoners, and open to the nations a new way of life, whose inner law will no longer be violence, but the love of people for one another.
From Les Évangiles, traduction nouvelle, avec des notes et des réflexions · reworded by Tolstoy .
What changedThe new road at whose entrance the nations will hear “Go in peace” becomes “a new way of life, whose inner law will no longer be violence, but the love of people for one another.”

Faithful until the last clause. Lamennais ends "une route nouvelle, à l’entrée de laquelle il leur sera dit : Allez en paix"; Tolstoy ends «новый путь жизни, внутренний закон которой будет уже не насилие, а любовь людей друг к другу».
Translation note. “Take away the sin of the world”: the words of John 1:29 (KJV: “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”).
4. Humanity moves forward only because faith moves forward. And the forward movement of faith lies not in the discovery of new religious truths, not in finding a new relation of human beings to the world and to its origin — there is nothing new — but in casting off everything superfluous that has been added to religious understanding. There are no new religious truths: for as long as we have known rational human beings, their relation to the world and its origin has been established just as it is now. If there is movement in religion, it lies not in discovering anything new, but only in cleansing what has already been discovered and expressed.
5. Faith is the indicator of the highest understanding of life open at a given time and in a given society to its best, most advanced people, an understanding to which all the other people of that society inevitably and invariably draw nearer.
We must not confuse true progress, religious progress, with technical, scientific, and artistic progress. Technical, scientific, and artistic success can be very great alongside religious backwardness, as is happening in our time.
If you want to serve God, be above all a worker for religious progress, which consists in the struggle with superstitions and in the clarifying and simplifying of religious consciousness.
Translation note. The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the dash; the English sets the line as one.
