Life is movement, and therefore the good of life is not a certain state, but a certain direction of movement.

Such a direction is the service not of oneself, but of God.

    1. Some seek the good, or happiness, in power, others in science, still others in sensual pleasure. But those people who are truly close to their good understand that it cannot lie in what only some people, and not all, can own. They understand that the true good of man is such that all people can possess it at once, without division and without envy; it is such that no one can lose it unless he himself wishes to.

The middle of B. 425, shortened. Kept: the three places where men seek the good (authority, curiosity and the sciences, pleasure) and the conclusion of those who came nearer, that the true good must be one that all can possess at once, 'sans diminution et sans envie' (without diminution and without envy; «без раздела и без зависти», without division and without envy), and that no one can lose against his will. Left out: 'les curiosités' (curiosity), leaving «в науке» (in science); the clause on goods that, shared, 'affligent plus leur possesseur, par le manque de la partie qu'il n'a pas, qu'elles ne le contentent' (pain their owner more by the part he lacks than they please him); and Pascal's reason. 'Ne peuvent être possédées que par un seul' (can be possessed by one alone) becomes «чем владеть могут только некоторые люди, а не все» (what only some people, not all, can possess). «блага или счастья» (good or happiness) joins the Brunschvicg text's 'le bien' and the older editions' 'la félicité' (Didot). The Circle repeats Tolstoy's Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), April 27, word for word but for spelling and one «он»; that Pascal came from A. I. Orlov's «Французский ученый Влас Паскаль» (Посредник, 1889), not found online.

    2. Happiness is what we desire for ourselves alone; the good is what we desire for ourselves together with all. Happiness is attained by struggle; the good, on the contrary, by submission.

Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the dashes and commas; it is set here as one span.

    3. There are few true goods. The only true good is that which is good and right for all.

And therefore, if you want to be useful and not harmful to people, do only what is in accord with the common good. Whoever acts so will gain the good for himself.

    Marcus Aurelius.

From Meditations · reworded by Tolstoy .
    What changed

Marcus’s aim “of a common kind,” which makes a man “always the same,” becomes a rule of conduct, “if you want to be useful and not harmful to people, do only what is in accord with the common good,” and the man who keeps to it “will gain the good for himself”; the opening sentence, on having “one and always the same object in life,” is left out. †

He who has not one and always the same object in life, cannot be one and the same all through his life.

Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), 23 July, reworked. Marcus: "He who has not one and always the same object in life, cannot be one and the same all through his life. ... For as there is not the same opinion about all the things which in some way or other are considered by the majority to be good, but only about some certain things, that is, things which concern the common interest, so also ought we to propose to ourselves an object which shall be of a common kind and political. For he who directs all his own efforts to this object, will make all his acts alike, and thus will always be the same." The 1903 Russian gives the goods men agree on as «Настоящих благ немного. То только истинное благо и добро, что благо и добро для всех» (true goods are few; that alone is true good which is good for all) and keeps the aim, «чтобы не уклоняться от избранной цели, надо, чтобы эта цель была добро, согласное с общим благом» (so as not to stray from the chosen aim, the aim must be a good in accord with the common good). The Circle words the second sentence «Настоящее благо только то, что благо и добро для всех» and makes the second half a rule of conduct, «если хочешь быть полезным, а не вредным людям, делай только то, что согласно с общим благом» (if you want to be useful and not harmful to people, do only what accords with the common good), and both end «приобретет себе благо» (will gain good for himself) where Marcus has "will always be the same". Marcus's opening sentence on having one aim is left out. The 1903 Marcus Aurelius came from the Posrednik edition of the Meditations, L. D. Urusov's translation (Jubilee vol. 40 commentary); the saved scan of Urusov (sources/marcus-urusov-1882) has no text layer and was not compared.

Translation note. Two words for “good” stand together here: «благо», the good that is had or received, and «добро», the moral good. The second is given as “right” to keep them apart.

    4. True good is the service of God. Service is always achieved by expending one’s animal life, just as light is achieved only by expending combustible material.

    5. In doing good to our neighbors we do, without noticing it ourselves, far more for ourselves than for others.

    6. Do good without choosing to whom. The good you have done will not be lost, even if you have forgotten about it.

In doing good lies the only sure means of being happy.

The closer what we do or experience is to the true good, the more natural is our desire to share that good with others.
