In order to walk, you must know where you are going. The same is needed in order to live reasonably and well. You must know where life leads, both my own life and the life of all people.

    1. Perfection belongs to God. To desire the perfect belongs to man.

    Goethe.

Goethe: perfection is the norm of heaven, to will the perfect the norm of man. Tolstoy writes «богу» (God) for "heaven" and «свойственно» (proper to) for "the norm", and makes "to will" «Желать» (to wish). Goethe sets the sentence in quotation marks among his posthumous notes, which may mark it as a saying he copied; its earlier source was not found. The zeno.org page is the only German text saved.

Translation note. The Jubilee text breaks the italics at the dash; the English sets the passage as one.

    2. Life is not given us so that we may make merry without laboring. No, life is a struggle and a campaign. A struggle of good with evil, of justice with wrong, of freedom with oppression, of love with the lusts of the personality; life is the march of our I toward the realization of that ideal which shines before our mind and our heart like a breaking dawn.

    Giuseppe Mazzini.

    3. We all know that we do not live as we ought, and not as we could live. It is this very thought, that life can and should be better, that we must never abandon. But we must remember it not only in order to condemn our present life, but in order to establish a better life. We must believe that life should be better than it is now, and live so that it can become better.

    4. People often say: “Human beings are weak, you will never become a saint, there is no use even trying, so let us live like everyone else.” There is a great mistake in these words. We must try to live well not in order to become saints, but in order to become better than we were. In this lies the chief task in the life of all people. And in this lies the good both of each person and of all humanity.

    5. The Ideal is in thyself, the impediment too is in thyself: thy Condition is but the stuff thou art to shape that same Ideal out of.

    Carlyle.

    Tolstoy’s version, in English
The ideal is in yourself. The obstacles to attaining it are in yourself as well. Your situation is the material out of which you must realize this ideal.
    Carlyle’s own words
Fool! the Ideal is in thyself, the impediment too is in thyself: thy Condition is but the stuff thou art to shape that same Ideal out of: what matters whether such stuff be of this sort or that, so the Form thou give it be heroic, be poetic?

A close translation of one clause, split into three sentences; 'the impediment' becomes 'the obstacles to attaining it', 'shape … out of' becomes 'realize'. 'Fool!' and the question that follows are not used. The Jubilee list names Nikiforov's Carlyle selection «Загадка сфинкса» (1900).

Translation note. Tolstoy kept the author’s words closely, so the author’s own English is printed here (ruling 1); Tolstoy’s Russian, translated, is in the source panel.

    6. Perfection is perfection only when its realization is possible only in thought, when it appears attainable only in infinity, and when therefore the possibility of drawing near to it is infinite.

To hope and believe that the good of which we are conscious will be realized both in us and in the world is the chief condition of the possibility of its realization. But not to believe in this, and to think that we will always be as bad as we are now and that all people will always live as badly as they live now, is the chief obstacle to drawing nearer to its realization.
