Art is a human activity that unites people in one and the same feeling. If these feelings are good, the activity of art is beneficial; and vice versa.

    1. Always, at every time and in every human society, there is a religious consciousness, common to all the people of that society, of what is good and what is bad, and it is this religious consciousness that determines the worth of the feelings conveyed by art.

    2. Christian art must bring it about that the feelings of brotherhood and love for one’s neighbors, now accessible only to the best people of society, become habitual feelings, the instinct of all people. By calling up in the imagination of all people the feelings of brotherhood and love, Christian art will accustom people to experience the same feelings in reality. It lays down in people’s souls the rails along which the actions of people brought up by such art will naturally run.

    3. The essence of the Christian consciousness lies in the recognition by each of us of our sonship to God and of the union, flowing from this recognition, of people with God and with one another, as is said in the Gospel (John 17:21); and so the content of Christian art is those feelings that further the union of people with God and with one another.

Translation note. The reference is printed «Иоан. 17—21»; the verse meant is John 17:21, where the KJV has “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us.”

    4. Works of Christian art can only be those works that unite all people without exception, either by calling up in people the consciousness that their position in relation to God and their neighbor is the same, or by calling up in people one and the same feeling, even the simplest, so long as it is not contrary to Christianity and is natural to all people without exception.

    5. The Christian teaching so changed people’s ideal that, as is said in the Gospel, what was great before men became an abomination before God. The ideal became not the greatness of Pharaoh and the Roman emperor, not the beauty of the Greek or the riches of Phoenicia, but humility, chastity, compassion, love.

The hero became not the rich man but the beggar Lazarus; Mary of Egypt not in the time of her beauty but in the time of her repentance; not those who acquire wealth but those who renounce it, who live not in palaces but in catacombs and huts.

Translation note. The Gospel words are Luke 16:15, where the KJV has “that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.” Lazarus is the beggar of the parable in Luke 16:19–31.

    6. The purpose of art in our time is to carry over from the realm of the intellect into the realm of feeling the truth that the good of people lies in their union with one another, and to establish, in place of the violence that reigns now, that kingdom of God, that is, of love, which seems to all of us the highest aim of the life of humanity.

    7. The variety of the feelings that flow from religious consciousness is infinite, and they are all new, because religious consciousness is nothing other than the indication of a new relation of people to the world, whereas the feelings that flow from the desire for pleasure are not only limited but were long ago experienced and expressed. And so the unbelief of the upper European classes has led them, as well, to an art that is the poorest of all in content.

It may be that in the future new ideals, higher still than those of today, will open before art, and art will realize them; but in our time the purpose of art is clear and definite.

The task of Christian art is to call up in people the feeling of brotherly union.
