Most of people’s actions are done not from reasoning, not even from feeling, but from unconscious imitation, from suggestion.

    1. Actions done by suggestion can be good or evil. Only actions done consciously, at the demand of conscience, cannot be bad. And yet for every thousand actions we do by suggestion, there is scarcely one done consciously.

    2. Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his own childishness, a childishness he himself maintains. Childishness consists in his inability to use his reason without the guidance of another. And this childishness is maintained by man himself when its cause lies not in a lack of reason but in a lack of resolve and courage to use it without the guidance of another.

(1784), as excerpted in Raoul Richter, Kant-Aussprüche (1901), Kant-Aussprüche no. 112, under «Bedeutung der freien Kritik» (Richter's register: Was ist Aufklärung?, Hartenstein IV, 161); Berlinische Monatsschrift, December 1784, p. 481.

The essay's first three sentences, closely: enlightenment is man's leaving his self-incurred immaturity; immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without another's guidance; this immaturity is self-incurred when its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in lack of resolution and courage to use it without another's guidance. Tolstoy writes «ребячество» (childishness) for “Unmündigkeit” (immaturity, nonage), «им же самим поддерживаемого» (kept up by himself) for “selbstverschuldeten” (self-incurred), and «разум» (reason) for “Verstand” (understanding). He sets the essay's motto as a thought of its own, 9-28.3. John Richardson's English (Essays and Treatises, vol. I, 1798, “What is Enlightening?”) is on archive.org, but both scans' OCR is too damaged to quote.

    3. Have the courage to use your own reason. That is the guiding rule of enlightenment.

    Kant.

The essay's fourth sentence, with Horace's “Sapere aude!” (dare to be wise) left out: have courage to use your own understanding, is therefore the motto of enlightenment. Tolstoy writes «собственным разумом» (your own reason) for “deines eigenen Verstandes” (your own understanding) and «руководящее правило» (the guiding rule) for “der Wahlspruch” (the motto), and drops “also” (therefore), since the thought now stands apart from 9-28.2, the three sentences before it. It is set in italics in the Jubilee text. Richardson's English of 1798 is on archive.org, its OCR too damaged to quote.

    4. If, among all the voices speaking in our soul, we could unerringly recognize the voice of our true, eternal I, we would never err, never do evil. That is just why we need to know ourselves.

    5. Look attentively at the causes of the ignorance of the masses, and you will see that the chief cause lies not at all in a lack of schools and libraries, as we are used to thinking, but in the superstitions that are suggested to them, and unceasingly kept up in them by every means of suggestion, by those who profit from these superstitions.

    6. True enlightenment is spread only by the example of a moral life. All the supposedly enlightening activity of schools, books, newspapers, theaters, and the like not only has nothing in common with enlightenment but for the most part is directly opposed to it.

Every time you feel ready to act not from reasoning and not from your own inner impulse, but from an outward influence, someone else’s, stop and consider whether the suggestion that draws you is good or bad.
