Love is a manifestation of the divine essence, for which there is no time, and therefore love manifests itself only in the present, now, at every moment of the present.
1. To love, in general, means to do good. That is how we all understand love, and we cannot understand it otherwise.
And love is not merely a word, but activity directed to the good of others.
If we decide that we had better refrain from the demands of a present love, even the very smallest, for the sake of another, future manifestation of a greater love, then we are deceiving either ourselves or others, and we love no one but ourselves alone.
There is no love in the future; love is only activity in the present. And anyone who does not show love in the present has no love.
2. Let us not delay in being just, compassionate, and attentive to those we love; let us not wait until they or we are stricken with illness or threatened with death. Life is short, and there cannot be too much time for gladdening the hearts of our fellow travelers on this short journey. Let us make haste, then, to be kind.

The last sentences of the entry for 16 December 1868, written while Amiel waited for news of his dying friend Charles Heim; translated closely. Two words change: 'démonstratifs' (demonstrative, showing our love) becomes «внимательными» (attentive), and 'la sombre traversée' (the dark crossing) becomes «в этом коротком переезде» (on this short crossing). Ward adds 'be swift to love' to Amiel's 'Hâtons-nous d'être bons' (let us hasten to be kind); the Russian follows the French («Поспешим же быть добрыми»). Tolstoy printed the thought again in На каждый день, word for word, signed 'after Amiel'. Mrs. M. L. Tolstaya's Russian selection, «Из дневника Амиеля» (Посредник, 1894; the Jubilee list of the Circle's sources names the 1901 printing), was not found online.
3. Hide yourself from the unfortunate person whom you help: let him enjoy the benefit without knowing the name of his benefactor.

6. The teaching of the Gospel contains a simple faith, namely faith in God and reverence for him, or, what is the same thing, obedience to his law. And his whole law lies in one thing only: to love one’s neighbor. To love one’s neighbor as oneself means to submit to the law and to be happy in fulfilling the law; and, conversely, to despise and hate one’s neighbor — this means to fall into rebellion and obstinacy.

Source text: la.wikisource.orgIn English · R. H. M. Elwes, 1883The doctrine of the Gospels enjoins nothing but simple faith, namely, to believe in God and to honour Him, which is the same thing as to obey him.
Moreover, the Bible teaches very clearly in a great many passages what everyone ought to do in order to obey God; the whole duty is summed up in love to one's neighbour.
It cannot, therefore, be denied that he who by God's command loves his neighbour as himself is truly obedient and blessed according to the law, whereas he who hates his neighbour or neglects him is rebellious and obstinate.

Three sentences of Spinoza's, one between them left out, the rest kept closely with small changes. Left out: that there is no need to heap up the texts of Scripture that commend obedience, and the clause that Scripture teaches what each must do to obey God “very clearly in a great many places”. Changed: “nihil praeter simplicem fidem continet” (contains nothing but simple faith) becomes «содержит простую веру» (contains a simple faith), without “nothing but”; “Deo obedire” (to obey God) becomes «послушание его закону» (obedience to his law); “ex Dei mandato” (by God's command) before loving one's neighbor as oneself is left out; “secundum legem beatus” (blessed according to the law) becomes «быть счастливым в исполнении закона» (to be happy in fulfilling the law); and “odio habet, vel negligit” (hates or neglects) becomes «презирать и ненавидеть» (to despise and hate). Kept: the whole law consists in this one thing, love towards one's neighbor; he who hates his neighbor is rebellious and obstinate («впасть в возмущение и упорство»). How Tolstoy read Spinoza was not found.
7. There are two kinds of love.
In the one, I simply love people, without knowing love for the spiritual principle that is one in all people.
In the other, I love only one thing in all people — the spiritual principle that is one in all people.
The difference between the one love and the other is that in the first case I will love people only so long as they are pleasant to me.
In the second case, when I love in people their essence, which is one in all of us, I will love people even when they are unpleasant to me.
In the first case we will again and again be changing the objects of our love, changing wives, friends, husbands, and so on, since the people we love are constantly changing, and our feelings toward them change as well.
In the second case, as our own moral growth proceeds, we will love more and more that divine spiritual principle which we will come to know more and more clearly in all people.

Not found. As in October to June, no online text of F. A. Strakhov (1861–1923) holds the thought (there are two kinds of love: loving people without love for the one spiritual principle in all, and loving in all people only that one principle; the first lasts while they please us, so we change wives, friends, and husbands as people and our feelings change; the second loves them even when they displease us, and grows as we come to know the divine principle in all more clearly). The Jubilee commentary (vol. 42) says Strakhov read the Circle's proofs and that Tolstoy cut and corrected the reflections of his that went into it, and that one of them came from Strakhov's own unpublished notes, so this one may be from his manuscripts. Tolstoy kept a shorter version for «Путь жизни», printed among its variants (Jubilee vol. 45, no. 55, to ch. V «Любовь»), signed «Федор Страхов».

At times it is agonizingly hard to remember how you could have done a deed of mercy and did not do it, how you irreparably and forever deprived of help the one who was waiting for it from you, and yourself of the joyful consciousness of having done what you ought.
