Текст источника: archive.orgВ английском переводе · Mrs. Humphry Ward, 1885One thing only is necessary--the committal of the soul to God. Look that thou thyself art in order, and leave to God the task of unraveling the skein of the world and of destiny. What do annihilation or immortality matter? What is to be, will be. And what will be, will be for the best. Faith in good--perhaps the individual wants nothing more for his passage through life.

3. One thing is needful: to give oneself up to God. Keep yourself in order, and leave it to God to untangle the skein of the world and its destinies. Let there be annihilation or immortality. What must be, will be. What will be, will be good. To make the journey of life, a man needs nothing but faith in the good.

Текст источника: archive.orgВ английском переводе · Mrs. Humphry Ward, 1885To see all things in God; to make of one’s own life a journey toward the ideal; to live with gratitude, with devoutness, with gentleness and courage; this was the splendid aim of Marcus Aurelius.
But what a false Christianity is that which slanders wisdom and seeks to do without it! In such a case I am on the side of wisdom, which is, as it were, justice done to God, even in this life. The relegation of life to some distant future, and the separation of the holy man from the virtuous man, are the signs of a false religious conception.

4. To see all things in divine perfection, to make of one’s life a movement toward that perfection — in this lies the wonderful point of view of the sages of antiquity: Socrates, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius. There is a kind of Christianity that speaks evil of wisdom and chooses not to acknowledge it. And yet how much higher is the wisdom that is content with the kingdom of God on earth than the teaching which teaches that it is possible only beyond the grave.
The mark of a false teaching is this: to put off life to another time, and to value a man who believes in its teaching above a virtuous man.

5. Man cannot attain happiness, because the higher his aspirations to worldly happiness, the less they can be realized. Nor can the fulfillment of duty give happiness. This fulfillment gives peace, and not happiness.

How are we to go on when there is no hope at all? Stupefy ourselves, or turn to stone? The answer is always the same: the merging of our own will with the will of God. Come what may, if you feel peace of conscience, if you feel reconciled and in your place. Be what you ought to be — the rest is God’s affair. And even if there were no God of love, but only the law of all things, duty would still be the answer to the mystery.

2. Imagination creates phantoms and fears them — this is forgivable in it, because it is imagination. But that the mind should submit to and fear the reasonings it engenders is unforgivable in it, because it cannot and must not be deceived. And yet the superstition of magnitude is a deception of the mind, which creates the notion of space. But what is created cannot be greater than its creator, nor the son greater than the father. Here a correction is needed. The mind must free itself from space, which gives it a false notion of itself. But this liberation is possible only when we learn to see space in the mind, instead of seeing the mind in space. How so? — By returning space to its fundamental property. Space is a condition of the mind’s activity.
Therefore God is everywhere without occupying billions of cubic versts, neither a hundred times fewer nor a hundred times more.
In consciousness the world has no space, but in reasoning about it, heavens within heavens are needed.
Time and number, too, are not needed by consciousness, but are found only in the mind; therefore man is not less, but greater than the most enormous space and than infinite time and number.

1. We may be solitary in our own private and passing surroundings, but each of our thoughts and each of our feelings finds, has found, and will find its echo in humanity. For some people, whom the greater part of humanity acknowledges as its leaders and enlighteners, this echo is enormous and resounds with particular force; but there is no man whose thoughts do not produce on others the same kind of effect, though many times smaller. Every sincere expression of the soul, every declaration of personal conviction, serves someone or something — even if no one knows of it, and even when they stop your mouth or throw a noose around your neck. A word said to someone retains an indestructible effect and, like all motion, is transformed into other forms but is not annihilated.

5. Innocence and childhood are sacred. The sower scattering seed, the father or mother casting a fruitful word into a child’s soul, are doing a sacred work and ought always to do it religiously, with reverence and prayer, for they labor for the kingdom of God. All sowing is a mysterious work, whether the seed falls on earthly soil or into human souls. Every man is like a farmer; his whole task, if it is rightly understood, lies in cultivating life and sowing it everywhere; such is the calling of humanity, and this calling is holy. And the word is its chief instrument.
We too often forget that the word is at one and the same time both a sowing and a revelation. The consequences of a word spoken in season are beyond counting. Oh, how deep the meaning of the word is, but we are dull, because we are corporeal! We see the stones, the trees along the road, the furnishings of our dwellings; we see everything that is matter. But we do not notice the train of invisible thoughts that fill the air and constantly beat their wings around each of us.

4. I feel with particular force that man, in all that he does or can do that is beautiful, great, and good, is only the instrument of something or someone higher than himself. This feeling is faith. The believer is present, with a trembling of sacred joy, at these miracles that are worked through him, and not from him, and that take place within him. He puts his will at their disposal, trying reverently to efface himself, so as to distort as little as possible the higher work of this power, which for a time is using him to do its work. He becomes impersonal and annihilates himself; he feels that his “I” must vanish when the Holy Spirit speaks, when God acts. So the prophet hears the call; so a young mother feels the child stir in her womb. As long as we feel our “I,” we are limited, self-loving, captives; but when, in harmony with the life of the world, we respond to the voice of God, our “I” vanishes.

Что измененоОпределение Амиеля, искусство как «the bringing into relief of the obscure thought of nature», стало определением в духе самого Толстого: «такое воздействие на людей, при котором в душах их таинственное становится очевидным», а вместо «The great artist is the simplifier» — «Истинный художник всегда упрощает».

1. How can a bad mood be conquered? First of all, by humility: when you know your weakness, why be irritated when others point it out? It is not kind of them, but they are right. Then by reasoning: in the end you will still remain what you were, and if you thought too highly of yourself, you have only to change your opinion of yourself; a neighbor’s discourtesy leaves us just as we were. But above all, by forgiveness: there is only one means of not hating those who do us evil and injury — to do them good, to conquer your anger with kindness; you will not change them by this victory over your feelings, but you will curb yourself.

4. Nothing can draw the poisoned sting out of a wound except the balm of silent and considerate mercy. Why let yourself be irritated by human malice, by ingratitude, by envy, even by treachery? There will never be an end to bickering, complaints, and punishments. The simplest thing is to wipe it all away. Offenses, reproaches, and outbursts trouble the soul. One must have a means of healing these ills. Fire purifies everything in the material world; love, in the spiritual world.

3. One thing only is needful: to be conscious of God. All the feelings, all the powers of soul and mind, all the outward means of understanding are only openings onto the Divinity, only ways of adoring God. You must know how to tear yourself away from all that can be lost, and attach yourself solely to what is eternal and fundamental, and enjoy all the rest as something lent to you for a time. To adore, to understand, to receive, to feel, to give, to act — this is your law, your duty, your happiness, your heaven — come what may, even death. Establish inner harmony, live before God, in communion with him, and leave it to the eternal powers, which you cannot fight against, to guide your life. If death does not take you yet, so much the better. If it carries you off, again so much the better. If it half kills you, still so much the better: it closes to you the field of success in order to open to you the field of great deeds, of self-renunciation, of moral greatness. Every life has its own greatness, and since it is impossible for you to go outside God, it is better to choose him consciously as your dwelling.

5. The center of life is not in thought, not in feeling, not in will, not even in consciousness insofar as it thinks, feels, and wills; for a moral truth may be grasped by all these means and still escape us. Deeper than our consciousness lies our being: our essence, our true foundation. Only those truths that enter this realm, having become our very selves, unexpectedly and unintentionally, instinctively and unconsciously — only those make up our real life, that is, our true “I.” So long as we can make out any space between the truth and ourselves, we are outside it. Thought, feeling, desire, the consciousness of life — all this is not yet life. In essence, we can find peace and tranquility only in life, and in eternal life. And eternal life is the divine life; it is God. To be a divine being — that, then, is the aim of life; only then can the truth not be lost by us, because it is no longer outside us, nor even in us, but we are the truth, and the truth is us; we are then the truth, the will, and the work of God. Freedom then becomes our nature; the creature is one with the Creator, is united with him by love, becomes what it ought to be. Its education is complete, and its final bliss begins. The sun of time sets, and the light of eternal bliss appears.

All human industry is a liberation from the power of brute nature; and the progress of justice is nothing other than a series of limits to which the tyranny of the strong has been subjected.
5. Blessed is childhood, which amid the cruelty of the earth gives at least a little of heaven. These eighty thousand daily births of which statistics speak are, as it were, outpourings of innocence and of a freshness that struggles not only against the destruction of the race but also against human corruption and the universal contagion of sin. All the good feelings called forth around the cradle and childhood are one of the mysteries of great Providence; destroy this refreshing dew, and the whirlwind of selfish passions will parch human society as if by fire.
If we suppose that humanity consisted of a billion immortal beings whose number could neither increase nor decrease, where would we be and what would we be, great God! We would no doubt become a thousand times more learned, but also a thousand times worse. Knowledge would accumulate, but all the virtues that are born of suffering and devotion, that is, the family and society, would be dead. There would be no compensation.
Blessed is childhood for the good that it gives of itself, and for the goodness it brings forth without knowing or wishing it, only by making itself loved, by letting itself be loved. Only thanks to it do we see on earth a little piece of paradise. Blessed, too, is death. Angels can have no need of either birth or death in order to live; but for men both the one and the other are necessary, inevitable.

Wisdom consists in submitting to the universal illusion without being deceived by it.
I think that reason inevitably leads us to the consciousness that everything material is only a dream within a dream. Only the sense of duty, the demands of morality, lead us out of the realm of magic dreams. Only conscience tears us away from the spell of Maya; it disperses the fumes of kef, the hallucinations of opium, and the calm of contemplative indifference. It, conscience, thrusts us into the consciousness of human responsibility.

This impoverishment, then, is only superficially a loss, a reduction.

3. What is an acorn but an oak stripped of its branches, leaves, trunk, and roots, that is, of all its forms, all its particular features, yet gathered into its essence, into its productive force, which can win back again all that it has cast off? This impoverishment, then, is only an outward contraction. To return to one’s eternity — that is just what it means to die. To die is not to be annihilated, but to return to one’s potentiality.

Текст источника: archive.orgВ английском переводе · Mrs. Humphry Ward, 1885The religion, too, which Jesus professed must be disentangled from the religion which has taken Jesus for its object.
Just as the poor illuminations of a village _fête_, or the tapers of a procession, are put out by the great marvel of the sun, so the small local miracles, with their meanness and doubtfulness, will sink into insignificance beside the law of the world of spirits, the incomparable spectacle of human history, led by that all-powerful Dramaturgus whom we call God.

1. We must set the religion that Jesus professed free from the religion whose object is Jesus. And when we have come to know the state of consciousness that forms the basic cell and the principles of the eternal Gospel, we shall have to hold fast to it.
As the wretched lamps of a village illumination or the little candles of processions go out before the great miracle of the sun’s light, so the petty, local, accidental and doubtful miracles will go out before the law of the life of the spirit, before the great spectacle of human history guided by God.

1. Social life rests on consciousness, not on science. Civilization is above all a moral matter. If there is no honesty, no respect for right, no respect for duties, no love of neighbor — in a word, if there is no virtue — everything is in danger, everything collapses: neither the sciences, nor the arts, nor luxury, nor industry, nor rhetoric, nor the police, nor the customs can hold up a building that hangs in the air and has no foundation. A state founded only on calculation and held together by fear is a structure both ugly and unsound. Only the morality of the masses is the firm foundation of any civilization, and its cornerstone is duty. Those who fulfill it in quiet, setting a good example by doing so, are in this way the salvation and support of that glittering world which does not even know of them. Nine righteous men could have saved Sodom, but thousands upon thousands of good people are needed to save a nation from corruption and ruin.

3. A child’s religion depends on the conduct of his parents, not on their spoken instructions. The inward and unconscious ideal that moves their life, their faith — this is what influences the child; their words, their reproofs, their punishments, even their outbursts, are to him nothing but accidents; but their faith he divines and feels by instinct.
The child sees what we are through what we wish to seem; hence his reputation as a physiognomist.
That is why the first principle of education is this: educate yourself; and the first rule to follow if you would have command of a child’s will is: take command of your own.

4. Time is the greatest of illusions. It is only the inner prism through which we break up being and life, the form under which we see little by little what in idea is timeless. The eye does not see a sphere all at once, although the sphere exists all at once. One of two things is needed: either the sphere must turn before the eye that looks at it, or the eye must go around the sphere it is observing.
In the first case, it is the world unfolding, or seeming to unfold, in time; in the second, it is our thought, analyzing and step by step reconstructing. For the highest reason there is no time: what will be, is. Time and space are the infinite crumbled into pieces for the use of finite beings.
