Gluttony is the most common vice. We notice it so little only because almost everyone is subject to it.

    1. There are sins against people and there are sins against ourselves. Sins against people come from our not respecting the spirit of God in another person. Sins against ourselves come from our not respecting the spirit of God in ourselves. One of the most common sins against ourselves is overeating.

    2. If it were not for greed, not one bird would fall into the net. With this same bait men too are caught. The belly is a chain on the hands and fetters on the feet. The slave of the belly is always a slave. Do you want to be free? First of all free yourself from the belly. Eat to satisfy hunger, and not to get pleasure.

    After Saadi.

    3. Those who overeat are not able to fight against sloth, and for those who overeat and are idle it is harder still to fight against sexual lust. And therefore, according to all the teachings, the striving for self-restraint begins with the struggle against the lust of gluttony, begins with fasting.

Every man is a tamer of wild beasts, and these wild beasts are his passions. To draw their teeth and claws, to muzzle and tame them, to turn them into servants and domestic animals, fuming, perhaps, but submissive--in this consists personal education.

    4. Every man is like a tamer of wild beasts, and these beasts are his passions. To pull out their fangs and claws, to bridle them, to tame them, to make domestic animals of them, servants, growling perhaps, but submissive all the same — in this lies the task of self-education.

    5. God sent people food, and the devil — cooks.

    6. The sage Socrates himself refrained from everything superfluous, from what is eaten not to satisfy hunger but for the taste, and urged his disciples to do the same. He said that excess food and drink do great harm to both body and soul, and he advised never eating one’s fill but leaving the table while one still wants to eat. He reminded his disciples of the tale of wise Ulysses: how the enchantress Circe could not bewitch him only because he would not overeat, but turned all his companions into swine as soon as they fell upon her sweet dishes.

    8. Keep watch over your mouth: through it diseases come in. Act so that you still want to eat when you get up from dinner.

Intemperance in eating is not considered a sin only because it does no noticeable harm to others. But there are sins against our consciousness of our own dignity. Intemperance in eating is one of them.
