Our whole bodily life is a series of changes that we do not notice but that are open to observation. But the beginning of these changes, which came about in earliest childhood, and their end — in death — lie beyond human observation.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

    1. Truly, truly, I say to you: if a grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, does not die, it will remain alone; but if it dies, it will bring forth much fruit; he who loves his soul will lose it, and he who hates his soul in this world will keep it for life eternal.

    John 12:24–25.

What is the acorn but the oak which has lost its branches, its leaves, its trunk, and its roots--that is to say, all its apparatus, its forms, its particularities--but which is still present in concentration, in essence, in a force which contains the possibility of complete revival? This impoverishment, then, is only superficially a loss, a reduction.

    3. What is an acorn but an oak stripped of its branches, leaves, trunk, and roots, that is, of all its forms, all its particular features, yet gathered into its essence, into its productive force, which can win back again all that it has cast off? This impoverishment, then, is only an outward contraction. To return to one’s eternity — that is just what it means to die. To die is not to be annihilated, but to return to one’s potentiality.

Is any man afraid of change? Why, what can take place without change? What then is more pleasing or more suitable to the universal nature? And canst thou take a bath unless the wood undergoes a change? and canst thou be nourished, unless the food undergoes a change?
Dost thou not see then that for thyself also to change is just the same, and equally necessary for the universal nature?
One thing only troubles me, lest I should do something which the constitution of man does not allow, or in the way which it does not allow, or what it does not allow now.

    5. Can change really frighten you? Why, nothing in the world is done without change. You cannot heat water without the firewood undergoing a transformation; nourishment is impossible without the food being changed. The whole life of the world is nothing but change. Understand that the transformation awaiting you has exactly the same meaning: it is necessary by the very nature of things. You must take care for one thing only: not to do anything contrary to true human nature, and to act in all things as it directs.

When things (in the vegetable world) have displayed their luxuriant growth, we see each of them return to its root. This returning to their root is what we call the state of stillness; and that stillness may be called a reporting that they have fulfilled their appointed end.
The report of that fulfilment is the regular, unchanging rule.

Death is a change in the form to which our spirit is joined. We must not confuse the form with what is joined to it.
